Singapore isn’t the only country with a tough stance against drugs.
China, similarly, has a death sentence for drug trafficking and two Singaporeans ran afoul of Chinese authorities when they were caught drug trafficking.
2 S’poreans Sentenced To Death For Drug-Trafficking In China
Siti Aslina Junaidi met a man named “Chibuzor Onwuka” when she was job hunting online back in 2014.
The man offered her $2,000 to $3,000 in commissions per trip for moving goods, normally handbags, toner cartridges and lingerie, between China and Cambodia.
Such trips happened once or twice per month.
She would reportedly pick up the products in Guangzhou & travel with them to Phnom Penh by plane.
In Jul 2015, she introduced Mohd Yusri Mohd Yussof to the lucrative scheme.
Unfortunately, the pair were caught after two of such trips together on Oct 2015 for smuggling 11 kg of methamphetamine in 28 women’s handbags kept within their suitcases.
In Jul 2020, the pair were found guilty of drug trafficking and were sentenced to death.
Ministry Of Foreign Affairs Providing Assistance
The Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) announced that they’ve been providing consular assistance to the two Singaporeans.
This includes visiting them regularly until the Covid-19 outbreak happened earlier this year, staying in contact with their families to provide consular assistance, ensure that they have access to medical services and legal assistance.
M Ravi, who has been advising on the case, also revealed that a pro bono lawyer in China has stepped forward to help with the case.
Didn’t Know They Were Trafficking Drugs
Mohd Yusri’s sentencing has been suspended for two years and it’s speculated that he could get a lighter sentence, life imprisonment, instead.
Aslina, on the other hand, was thought to have a more “active” role in the offence.
Should her final appeal be unsuccessful, she will be executed.
Both Mohd Yusri and Aslina denied knowing about the drugs they were trafficking.

As for Chibuzor Onwuka, court documents reveals that he is being dealt with separately.
Previously, when a Singaporean was caught spying on the US for China, MFA has similarly rendered whatever assistance they could to him.
