Singtel Will Be Giving Discounts to People Who Were Affected by 8 June Disruption

In this time of working, learning and chilling from home, a stable and reliable internet connection has become just about as essential as a face mask.

And if you were doing any of those things at home yesterday (8 June), you may have experienced frustrating disruptions to your internet connection.

Indeed, Singtel had reported problems with its fibre broadband connection yesterday.

Outages were reported in several locations including Punggol, River Valley, Hougang, Tampines, Ang Mo Kio, Upper East Coast, Yishun, Bishan and Sembawang.

During the disruption, social media users had complained of the inconvenience caused to working from home, as well as home-based learning.

Singtel users had reported problems with their internet connection since 2am, while data from the DownDetector website showed reports of an outage being filed at around 2am, with a sharp increase in reports at around 9am, noon and 5.25pm.

Singtel had subsequently restored the affected connections and kept people in the know through periodic updates.

According to the company, all affected fibre broadband services had been fully restored as of 6.15pm yesterday.

The company apologised for the disruption and said they were aware that many people were working from home.

Singtel said that its engineers were investigating the cause of the major disruption, and that they are “taking steps to review [their] processes to prevent a recurrence”.

And for all those who had been affected by yesterday’s disruption, a peace offering has been made by Singtel; the company will be giving affected customers a 10% discount off their broadband subscription in June, as reflected in their July bill.

The company will also be waiving local mobile data charges for the day for affected customers who are Singtel postpaid mobile customers and who received a message from Singtel.

Major Media Outlets Like Guardian & CNN Down Due To Internet Outage

Another Internet outage that occurred yesterday (8 June) as well affected users in Singapore and all around the world.

Major international websites such as Amazon, Reddit and Twitch were rendered inaccessible yesterday evening.

A cloud computing network relied upon by these websites had been affected by technical issues.

Several global news sites such as CNN, The Guardian and The New York Times were also affected.

Singapore’s government websites and major news sites remained unaffected by the outage.

Sites that had been affected are linked to Fastly, which is a content delivery network. Affected sites began to get back up around an hour after disruptions were reported.

There had been speculations among netizens that this was a deliberate cyberattack, and the hashtag #cyberattack was found trending on Twitter.

However, according to Fastly, the outage was caused by a configuration error that resulted in disruptions across its network.

The company affirmed that they have since disabled the configuration.
