The island, located around 100 km southwest of the Maldives’ capital, Male, is part of the Alif Dhaal Atoll, drawing researchers and eco-tourists with the aim of studying these rare creatures.

While snorkelling, the teenager was struck by the propeller of a running boat.

Despite being immediately transported to Dhigurah Health Centre, the student was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Maldivian police have launched an investigation to determine further details surrounding the accident.

Dr Michael Johnston, Chief Executive Officer of SJI International, confirmed the student’s passing in a statement released on Friday.

Dr Johnston extended the school’s “heartfelt condolences” to the grieving family and emphasized that the SJI International community is deeply affected by the loss.

“The school community is mourning this tragic loss, and we are providing all possible support to the family during this difficult time,” Dr Johnston said, noting that further details could not be disclosed to respect the family’s privacy.

SJI International, which regularly offers students a range of outdoor educational programmes through its “expeditions,” maintains these excursions as part of its commitment to broadening students’ learning experiences.
