If you’re a fan of reality TV shows, you would definitely have seen a contortionist doing his or her thing on stage.
Their acts often draw out gasps of amazement and sometimes disgust from the audience, especially when they do that creepy spider-walk thing and get all up in your face.
Of course, the eerie carnival music and the matching latex bodysuit, which helpfully (NOT!) shows you the various pieces of bones sticking out of the contortionist’s body, help to pop up the goosebumps too.
Unfortunately, in this case, this extremely skinny and possibly very flexible person decided to use his talent to commit a crime instead of showcasing it for the world to see.
And what a waste of good talent that is!
Slipping through the cracks… literally
When interviewed by a reporter from Shin Min Daily (新明日报), one of the affected hawkers, 63-year-old Huang JinYe (黄金叶) mentioned that 5 hawker stalls in the same row as her were robbed. Each stall lost different amounts of money.
Her Nyonya stall is the first stall to be infiltrated by the thief.
There’s apparently a 30-cm gap in between the counter and the metal grill of the stall, and it is this gap that is believed to be the entry point for the burglar.
The person who’s apparently skinny and flexible enough to slip through the gap was reported to have rummaged through the cabinets to find the cash stashed away by the hawker stall owner.
Once found and pocketed, he then climbed the wall to the next stall to steal even more money.
According to Mdm Huang, “By climbing from one wall to another, he stole all the cash we kept at our stalls.”
Each stall reported around S$100 lost during the burglary, with the beverage stall losing the most – a whopping S$400, give or take.
Mdm Huang also said that because of convenience, most hawker owners usually keep some cash at their stalls, but after this incident, they will definitely have to be more careful.
It never pays to steal
Initial investigation revealed that the suspect stole around S$850 from the hawker stalls, out of which S$640 has been successfully recovered by the police.
According to the police statement as well, the suspect was charged with burglary in court.
Once convicted, he can be sentenced to up to 7 years in prison and fined.
For trespassing, the maximum penalty is a 3 months’ stint in jail and a fine of up to S$1,500.
