Beloved British Eatery Smiths Fish & Chips Closing in May After 14 Years at Balmoral Plaza

Smiths Authentic British Fish & Chips, a beloved F&B establishment at Balmoral Plaza along Bukit Timah Road, announced its impending closure in a Facebook post on 28 March 2025.

The restaurant will permanently shut its doors in May after serving customers for 14 years.

The restaurant, which opened in Singapore in 2006, cited “rising rental and operational costs” as the reason for its closure. In their heartfelt announcement, Smiths thanked customers for their loyal support throughout their years of operation.

“We’d love to see you a few more times before closing our doors. Come down, reminisce, and enjoy your favourite fish & chips with us!” the post read, inviting patrons to visit the establishment before it shutters for good.

According to their website, Smiths is “solely” owned by two British gentlemen who run the business “hands-on” day to day with genuine passion. The restaurant takes pride in calling itself “the only true authentic British fish & chips shop in Singapore”.

Traditional British Fare Made With Authentic Recipes

Smiths has built its reputation on serving high-quality British cuisine, with a focus on providing “the best of British fish and chips, cooked to order.” Their signature Cod or Haddock & Chips is made using the founder’s grandfather’s secret recipe from the 1950s.

The fish, imported from the United Kingdom, is crispy on the outside and meaty within. The chips served alongside are prepared fresh on-site each day, maintaining their commitment to quality.

Beyond their famous fish and chips, the restaurant offers other British classics such as Steak And Guinness Pie & Chips, English Cottage Pie, and Bangers & Mash—a quintessentially British dish comprised of an English sausage with mashed potatoes, caramelised onions and mushy peas.
