If your blood is Type O, Singapore is calling on you to help her out.
By donating some of your blood to the blood bank.

I know, most of us don’t see the point in donating blood because somebody else’s going to donate anyway.

It’s kind of like the bystander effect where people are less likely to offer help in a crowded area because they thought other people would’ve reported the incident.
But here’s the thing: Singapore’s running out of blood liao.
The Red Cross and the Singapore Health Authorities (HSA) said that the stockpile of type O blood in Singapore is running low.
Right now, they only have half of the required stockpile and would need 500 donors over the next two weeks to bring the national stockpile back to the required level.
Why is Type O Blood Important?
So there you are, wondering if it’s that important to you. No one in your family is type O blood, and that’s all you care about.
But here’s the thing.
About half of the patients in Singapore are from the type O blood group. These people can only receive type O blood.

Also, in cases of emergency, if the medical staff attending to you isn’t sure of your blood type, they’ll give you type O blood as well.
In other words, it’s a one-save-all kind of blood you didn’t know you’d need. Kinda like a healing potion in Maple Story.
What is Donated Blood in S’pore Used For?
If you’re still not convinced about the danger of the situation, here’s what the blood is used for according to the HSA:
Things like giving birth, heart surgeries, transfusions; they require blood as well.
The agencies hope to at least garner six days’ supply of the blood to meet with the daily transfusion and emergency needs of Singapore.

Eat a light meal and drink plenty of water before a donation. And because you’re essentially draining away the lifeblood from your body, you might want to have adequate rest before you donate your blood.

Blood Donors Decreasing But Blood Needs Increasing
According to a report in 2017, the number of youths donating their blood fell by 13% within the period 2012-2016.
Plus, every year, there are about 600 donors who had to stop donating blood due to age-related illnesses.
Add in the fact that the demand for blood in Singapore is increasing by 3 to 5 per cent every year and you get why the government’s worried right now.

So if you haven’t donated any blood for the past 12 weeks, maybe it might be time to do so, eh?
After all, you’ll never know when you or your loved ones might need that blood to live to another day, right? Or the fact that it could be your blood that’s saving somebody else’s parents, siblings or girlfriend.
