Remember two years back when the entire Singapore was in an uproar over a Singaporean couple who dumped their newborn baby in a kitchen waste bin in Taiwan?

Remember a year back in October when we were, yet again, in another uproar because the same couple announced their marriage online?

Well, here’s some good news: justice has been served, folks.

S’pore Police Arrested Couple Earlier in Apr

On 28 April this year, the Singaporean couple was arrested by the Singapore Police Force (SPF).

According to TODAYonline, SPF had received a request for assistance from Taiwanese authorities after a newborn baby was found dead at a waste management facility. The horrifying incident had been traced back to a Singaporean couple.

SPF added that they have been “working with the Taiwanese authorities to review the evidence and have commenced investigations”.

Hopefully, we’ll see the couple being punished properly for their actions.

What Happened?

On 26 February 2019, an employee of a waste management facility in Taipei discovered the body of a newborn baby girl in a black plastic bag as he was sorting through the trash.

Obviously, investigations immediately commenced. Taiwanese authorities quickly traced the culprits back to a Singaporean couple, a then 24-year-old woman, Guo, and her 23-year-old boyfriend, Wang.

The couple had flown into Taiwan on 19 February 2019 and left on 26 February.

On 4 March 2019, the Taiwanese police confirmed that the DNA from the bloodstains they took from the hotel room in which the couple stayed in matched that of the newborn.

The Taiwanese media reported the incident on 25 March 2019, and the situation quickly blew up.

In February this year, the Taiwanese authorities issued an arrest warrant for the couple.

What’s the Minimum Punishment?

After the discovery and subsequent investigations by Taiwanese authorities, the case was classified as both homicide and infantiicde by the Taipei district prosecutor’s office—the baby had still been alive when she was delivered.

According to Taiwanese law, a mother who kills her newborn baby can be sentenced to up to five years’ jail, with the minimum being six months’ jail. A father who kills his newborn baby can either be given the death penalty or sentenced to life imprisonment, or be sentenced to at least 10 years’ jail.

However, things might not be that easy.

As reported by The Straits Times, Singapore does not have an extradition treaty or arrangement with Taiwan. This means that the couple cannot be arrested and charged in Taiwan—not unless the Singapore authorities voluntarily extradite the couple to Taiwan, even without a treaty.

That being said, the couple can still be charged in Taiwan.
