S’pore Domestic Helper Allegedly Given 1 Meal A Day & Gets Splashed With Water If She Wakes Up Past 5AM

Many of us probably have domestic helpers to help us in our daily chores at home or to help take care of kids and the elderly.

Most of us probably even have good relationships with our domestic helpers.

After all, they’ve travelled so far away from their own homes to come here so that they could earn a better living. The worst thing we could do is to make their lives way more difficult than it already was, right?

Well, apparently not everyone has thoughts like these.

Namely, the employers of Castina, an Indonesian domestic helper from Indramayu, a town in West Java.

In a video taken by a lady who was asking her questions at an HDB lift lobby, Castina can be seen tearfully sharing that she didn’t want to work here anymore because it was “depressing”.

She goes on further to explain why.

“Only One Meal A Day”

She mentioned that she is only allowed one meal a day and would be scolded if she dared to ask for more.

She is expected to wake up at 5am in the morning every day, and failure to do so will result in her being splashed with water.

If you thought that was it, think again.

She is also not allowed to contact her family back in Indonesia.

Castina told the lady behind the camera that she wanted to change her employer but her current employer won’t let her do so.

She even claimed that her employer would lock her up so that she cannot run away.

What kind of monster does this to another human being?

The lady offered a listening ear to Castina and then assured her that she will contact the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and give her the justice she deserves.

Investigations Are Ongoing

On 6 October, MOM mentioned on Facebook that they are aware of this case and are currently investigating the situation.

Castina is now staying at the embassy.

MOM also took the opportunity to remind all employers that helpers are entitled to three meals a day and also urged any foreign domestic helpers facing issues regarding their well-being to call the MOM Foreign Domestic Workers helpline at 1800 339 5505.

Hopefully, Castina’s employers get their well-deserved punishment and Castina can find a much better employer in the near future.
