It’s no surprise to anyone that birth rates in Singapore are still declining. Despite various efforts being made to reverse this, there’s still a lot left to do, but both the government and companies are trying to create a conducive environment to encourage having kids.
A good example of one of these companies is Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE). HPE is set to introduce family-friendly programmes beginning 21 October.
The star of the show though has got to be the 26 weeks paid leave new parents will receive.
“Let’s have more babies!” a voice in the distance shouts.
“Yeah!! Let’s have two more!!” another voice acquiescences.
Family-Friendly Option To Work Part-Time After Birth Of Child
This will result in a significant 10-week increase for mothers and 24 more weeks for fathers in Singapore.
HPE has clarified that the eligibility of these paid parental leave will be applied to parents with children who are born or adopted starting from 1 May 2019 and after.
That’s not all though; HPE will also introduce the Parental Transition Support which offers flexible work arrangement that will enable its staff to work part-time for up to 36 months after the birth or adoption of a child.
That’s really quite generous.
Retirement Transition Support & Wellness Fridays
Besides that, new parents aren’t the only ones who’ll benefit. HPE will also launch the Retirement Transition Support wherein staff who are about to retire will get to work part-time so that they can adjust to the lifestyle changes.
During this period, they will mentor other employees.
Additionally, ‘Wellness Fridays’ will let staff leave the office three hours earlier for one Friday every month to volunteer or spend time on personal and career development.
But wait a minute, this piece of news sounds almost too good to be true. Or is it?
Basically, HPE hopes that these changes will improve work/life balance and encourage long term careers with the company.
This way, both parents with children and HPE will reap benefits.
I’m hoping that this change will encourage more companies to take up similar initiatives as well.
