According to my Uncle Chan Pu Si, swimming’s a relatively dangerous sport.

“On one hand, you might get a leg cramp and end up sinking to the bottom of the pool, never to be found again,” he said cautiously.

“On the other hand, you might get dragged by one of those devious underwater entities to the bottom of the pool and be saved by a ragged lifeguard’s nasty breath.”

“Shouldn’t those consequences be… you know… reversed?”

“Nah, no time for that. But anyway, I haven’t breached upon the nastiest consequence of them all.”

“What, getting swallowed by a blue whale in Choa Chu Kang?”

“Well there’s that, but this one’s even nastier. Hold on let me rummage in my fanny pack.”

It took a while, but he eventually pulled out a series of photos.

“Was stalking Steven Lim’s hot body on Facebook when I saw these pictures by a certain Desiree Oh,” he frowned. “Once I saw them, I knew I had to print them out and show you.”

“Is that even legal? And don’t you have a wife already?”

“Your Aunt Matilda isn’t my wife; she’s a messenger from Hell disguised as my wife. But anyway, here, check these out.”

I shot him a withering glance before I looked at the photos.

“Blimey…” I mumbled. “They make my pimples look like cute strawberry shortcakes…”

“Yes Zhi Hao, beware

“These chloride burns are downright nasty.”

S’pore Kid Gets Small Itchy Bumps On Skin After Swimming; Finds Out They’re Chloride Burns

On 1 December 2019, Facebook user Desiree Oh took to the social media platform with harrowing photos of her daughter seemingly afflicted with patches.

The cause, she insinuates, appears to have been sustained chloride burns from swimming in a pool.

In case you don’t want to wade through an essay,

Here’s The TLDR Version

  • Her child sustained itchy small patches on her body.
  • Oh, under the impression that they’re insect bites, started applying “a few medicines”.
  • The spots spread to wider areas of her skin, and it got so bad that they had to visit a child clinic.
  • The patches swelled up and became “hot”, and her daughter was in so much pain that she would scream if anyone so much as touched her.
  • Her daughter’s appetite and energy levels suffered as a result.
  • A middle-aged lady saw the child and approached Oh, saying that the cause might be chloride burns as her own grandson had encountered it previously.
  • Oh went to consult a clinic (in Hougang) the lady had recommended.

  • She applied the prescribed medicine, and the swelling went down.
  • Her daughter’s appetite also returned at night.

Other takeaways include:

  • It wasn’t the first time her daughter took to the swimming pool. It was the first time, however, that she encountered such a situation.
  • Apparently, the chloride burns might’ve occurred because Oh’s daughter happened to have thin and sensitive skin during the period, or that the water might’ve been newly changed when she visited.
  • This means that it doesn’t matter which pool it was, as all pools contain and are cleaned with chlorine, and possess different levels and concentrations of chlorine in-between days.
  • Her daughter has since recovered from the traumatic incident without any scars.

Meanwhile, Netizens have expressed well wishes for the afflicted child, as well as tagged their peers to extend news coverage.

Some have also proposed alternative causes pertaining to the child’s burns.

Well, that does make sense too.

And so, with this article in mind, I feel it my duty to inform you that chlorine burns seem to be a reality…

And that you should take care to avoid such a painful stigma on your end.

But then again…simi is chlorine burn?

Chlorine Burns AKA Chlorine Rash

It’s easy to dismiss it as an allergy, but it isn’t.

Instead, it’s “irritant dermatitis”, kind of like a chemical burn; just think of how Joker in Batman got his skin colour and you get the gist.

But why does it happen to the poor girl?

For a start, chlorine dries the skin, so it might have irritated existing dermatitis. Moreover, she could have been sensitive to chlorine.
