I often wondered what our parents thought the future would be like?
At least through movies, dreams of robot helpers, star-ships and flying vehicles were dreams of many a childhood.
Slowly but surely, we’re advancing.
Touch-screen technology, self-driving cars and even smart-restaurants are now a product of reality.
In Singapore though, another thing that always interested me was air travel. We’re a small country and don’t need to do things like inter-city flights.
But air travel in Singapore might be a real thing soon, because travelling on PIE is just so yesterday.
A Near-Reaching Dream
The future is (almost) now.
The world’s first full-scale air taxi vertiport has been unveiled at the Float at Marina Bay on 21 October.
So yes you read that right, a taxi stand for a flying taxi.
Look at how pretty it is!
Named the VoloPort, it is the collaboration between Volocopter, the German urban air mobility and air taxi pioneer, and Skyports, the vertiport developer, owner and operator.
We’re even acknowledged to be prime candidates for this project.
According to Volcopter, Skyport has already identified several potential VoloPort locations and air taxi routes across Singapore.
They opened an office in Singapore in January this year and aim to hire full-time local staff by 2020.
If everything proceeds smoothly, we might be seeing more commercial flying taxis across Singapore soon as early as 2021!
I’m honestly excited to see where other VoloPorts would be located.
Please put one on top of our office building. You can find the address online.
Also, my house too.
Test Run
Of course, what would these VoloPorts be without the actual taxis.
The first air taxi test run is actually taking place a lot sooner than we thought: yesterday (22 October 2019).
Proceeding to cry now because I know I’ll miss it.
If any of you readers manage to catch a glimpse of it, do let me know what it was like!
Keep your eyes peeled though, because Volocopters fly a lot quieter than their fuel-powered helicopter brethren.
As for me, I’ll just be here, staying sad and looking at images of the future.
By the way, Terminator: Dark Fate is going to be released tomorrow. I’m sure it’s just a coincidence.
