Every year, the festive season gives us something new to enjoy – malls all across town will decorate their atriums with fun games and cute characters decked out in holly, the extravagant Christmas Wonderland at Gardens By The Bay will get progressively more grand and expensive, and now even Orchard Road has Christmas villages and various events stretched across its expanse.
“I’m dreaming of a white… Christmas..” will be on repeat wherever you go, amidst the mix of classic Christmas songs.
But we all know that’s kind of unrealistic, especially in sunny Singapore where it’s summer all year round and we haven’t seen a drop of snow save for those hail bits that drop-drop-dropped like grapes a few years back during the haze season.
So, with this little fact in mind, our beloved Land Transport Authority decided to give us some extra holiday cheer with a twist in our daily, otherwise boring, commutes to and from work and school.
Sandy Beach Themed Christmas Trains
From 9 Dec onwards, your travels are about to be just slightly more amusing this December.
Yep, our MRT trains and buses will be decked out in bright beach-themed decor for Christmas, filled with yellow sand and palm trees instead of white snow and pine trees, which are known to be synonymous with Christmas.
I guess since we don’t have snow in Singapore, we’ll just have to settle for the next best thing, which is… sand.
Titled “Tropical Beach Christmas”, many unique elements are included in the decor, such as starfishes wearing Santa hats and snowmen made out of sand. Maybe we can call them sandmen instead?
It may look kind of ironic, and no one would ever guess that these were Christmas decorations, but that’s what makes it fun – look at the little Christmas tree they tried to subtly weave into the soft sand image on the floor.
Look at how happy the starfish are to be celebrating Christmas!
They may not have eyes, but you can still see them radiating happiness, right?
You can experience this peculiar beach for yourself starting 9 Dec on the North-East Line and Downtown Line, as well as on the North-South Line, East-West Line and Circle Line from 16 Dec!
Train Stations And Buses Included Too
And that’s not all – certain train stations including the Dhoby Ghaut North-East Line (NEL) station concourse, the Dhoby Ghaut Circle Line platform, Bugis, Bukit Panjang, and Newton stations will carry the same decor, so you can further immerse yourself in this sandy wonderland.
Commuters can also enjoy them on bus services 5, 7, 14, 61, 65, 197, 857, and 972.
LTA commented that the decor was “part of its efforts to liven up the commuting experience during festive seasons and foster positive commuter culture.” Yep, this looks like it’ll be a good talking point with your colleagues or acquaintances when long train rides get awkward.
Maybe we’ll start seeing sandmen at Siloso Beach soon too.
