S’porean Cyclist Thrown Off Bicycle Cuz Bus Drove Too Close; Netizens Disagree

A wise old man once said:

“If you think Hell’s scary, you’ve obviously not seen the roads of Singapore.”

And I agree with him. Not that I’ve actually travelled down to Hell (yet), but having seen the roads of Singapore myself, I can attest to his statement:

The road can get pretty darn horrific at times.

And to further exemplify my case, I present this rather unfortunate event that happened just yesterday (14 Jan):

S’porean Cyclist Thrown Off Bicycle Cuz Bus Drove Too Close

Though there’s just a little twist.

Which you shall find out later on.

What happened?

According to Stomp, a woman was left injured after falling off her bicycle on Saturday morning (12 Jan), due perhaps to a bus who went slightly too close to her.

The incident occurred along Choa Chu Kang Road, towards Bukit Batok, at roughly 8:11 a.m.

Stomper Johnson, who submitted the story, said that he was cycling in front of his wife at the time.

“The coach was travelling beside my wife,” the 52-year-old recounted.

“As it approached my wife, it drove closer and closer, causing her to react instinctively and ride closer to the kerb to avoid the coach.”

“As a result, she hit the kerb and fell towards the grass verge,” he added.

Johnson expressed that his wife, 49-year-old Grace Tan, hit her head in the process, and suffered abrasions on her left leg.

As they were not particularly serious, however, Ms Tan didn’t see the doctor.

“I think it’s more of a wrong judgement on the driver’s part,” Johnson told Stomp. “He should have slowed down and overtaken with a bigger gap from my wife when the next lane was clear of traffic.

He managed to capture the incident on video.

“As can be seen from the video, the green SG Bus overtook safely by driving into the next lane.”

Netizens express dissent

Remember the twist I was so annoyingly foreshadowing earlier on?

Well, this is it.

As it is, readers might’ve been swayed by Stomp’s literal text, but they certainly weren’t by the video in question. Indeed, the general sentiment here could be presented with this one comment:

Though you’re wondering, here are some of the viewers’ more ‘pronounced’ reactions:

To the Netizens’ credit, one did give a more ‘formal’ explanation:

But it’s not all dissent over here, as some did slide into the couple’s camp:

These, however, are largely in the minority.

And so…

That leads us to the much-loved, much-anticipated, much-revered Moral Of The Story segment:

Who’s wrong and who’s right?

Technically speaking, the cyclist is allowed to be on the road as long as he or she keeps to the left (and not hit any lorry’s side mirror or throw a water bottle).

But in this case, the bus might not be able to see the cyclist due to the bigger blind spot a bus would have, or could have misjudged the overtaking since it’s a rather narrow lane.

So there we have it: it’s the dreaded 50-50 situation whereby no one’s wrong and no one’s right.
