S’porean Parents & 10 YO Child Found Unconscious After Inhaling Gas Leak At Thai Resort

Whenever I’m overseas (and sometimes even at home), my mum is always wary of funky smells.

Sometimes when we’re asleep at home in an air-conditioned room, she’d also check on us to see if we’re unconscious or anything due to possible harmful gases emitted.

I always thought she was being needlessly paranoid, but I guess she did have a reason to be worried.

Singaporean Family Unconscious From Gas Leak

A Singaporean couple and their 10-year-old son were enjoying their holiday in Thailand in the Phu Thap Boek resort on Wednesday (11 December).

Due to the cold weather, they turned on the water heater in their room, which was gas-fired.

Later on, a friend came over to their room to invite them for dinner but was horrified to find all three of them unconscious.

Turns out, they had inhaled the gas that was leaking from the water heater.

They were rushed down to the Ban Doi Nam Phiangdin national park unit where they were given first aid and oxygen by the rescue workers before being brought to Somdet Phra Yupharat Lom Kao Hospital by an ambulance.

As of Thursday afternoon (12 December), the woman has regained consciousness and recovered while the father and son are still being kept under close watch.

Prevention Tips

If you have a gas-powered water heater at home, this may be something to watch out for.

Smelling any gas near your water heater is not a normal thing and must absolutely be checked out. If you’re not sure, you can apply some soapy water with a brush to the pipe joints. If the water starts to bubble, the water heater is leaking.

At this point, be sure to turn off your water heater immediately and call for repair services.

A gas water heater that wasn’t properly installed or maintained can result in carbon monoxide emission – which is infamously dangerous due to its lack of colour and odour.

Be sure to keep your water heaters maintained and serviced regularly.
