S’poreans Are Confused & Think That The ‘Sad’ Version of National Anthem is the New Version

If you’re a Singaporean, you’d have sung this countless times even if you don’t understand a single Malay word:

The last time I sang it was during NS and even when I’ve ORD-ed for so long, I still remember the lyrics. I’m patriotic and I know that.

It was reported that today, a new recording of the national anthem would be released, and boy are we excited. Is it going to be different? Are they going to change the lyrics? Would it still be in Malay? Got rock version?

The only reason why we’ve so many questions is simple: not much details about the new national anthem are mentioned, other than the fact that it’s to “mark the 60th anniversary of the anthem, the national flag and the state crest.”

And so, today, this dropped.

People were like: Wait, what?

Are we going to sing that in parades?

Are we going to hear that every morning on the TV or on the radio?

Are we going for a funeral or what?

Now, hold your horses.

The Internet has done its thing again, this time letting its algorithm mess with our mind again.

POFMA should really go after the Internet seh.

Video Shared Widely Isn’t the New Recording

Obviously, if you’re as critical as my colleague who doubts everything except his Tinder date who catfished him, then you’d know that this MV isn’t the OG version, but merely another version.

In fact, if you take the effort to read the description, you’ll see this: “It is separate from the new recording of the anthem, broadcast from the steps of the National Gallery on Tuesday (Dec 3).”

This version is sung by veteran rocker Ramli Sarip, and he did this rendition during the recent NDP as well:

But still, confused Singaporeans started to give their take on this version, because we’re all headline readers:

From Facebook

But it’s understandable that people are misled into thinking that this would be the new recording, given that it’s the first result when you search for “singapore national anthem 2019” in YouTube.

Moreover, if you’re a CNA kia instead of a Straits Times kia because #paywallsucks, you’d only see this version in their Facebook Page.

Where’s the Real McCoy?

The new recording, which isn’t much different from the old version unless you’ve got super atas speakers and live in a hall, sounds like this:

It’s supposed to be of higher quality due to audio technological advances and apparently has more young voices with some adjustment to the tempo. It’s also five seconds shorter.

Honestly speaking, I can’t hear the difference but maybe it’s just me

But whatever it is, if you’ve a coffeeshop talk with your buddies tonight, do inform them of this “fake news” made by the Internet algorithm.

In case, you know, they decided to turn off the radio or TV every morning at 6:00 a.m.
