It’s official. We Singaporeans love our instant noodles. If you find yourself reaching for that packet of delicious Maggie Laksa, you’re not the only one.
Global Marketing research firm, Nielsen, reported that from 2015 to 2016, there was a growth of 7.9 per cent in the size of the instant noodle market in Singapore.
Supermarkets reporting an increase in demand for their instant noodles products
Sheng Shiong supermarket told TNP that there was a 10 per cent growth in the sale of it’s instant noodles products over the past two years.
NTUC Fairprice revealed that there was a 5-9 per cent spike in their sales while Cold Storage reported a double-digit growth over the past four to five years.
Sing Long Foodstuff, Samyang’s local distributor has revealed that orders for its hot chicken flavour increased by 25 to 30 per cent this year alone.
Too many exciting flavours
One reason why this is happening is because of the sheer variety of instant noodles available for us to buy.
Just think about it, back in the past, we’ve mostly eaten Maggie, Nissin or Myojo but today, you have Laksa, White Penang Curry and loads of Korean instant noodles such as the Samyang chicken flavour.
No longer do you have to eat Maggie Mee Assam flavour day in and day out. Feel like eating something spicy? Go for a Korean hot chicken flavour instant noodle. Feel up for something dry? Get the Har Mee dry instant noodle.
Eating instant noodles is no longer just a need; for some, it’s a want as well.
The main reason why it’s bad for Singaporeans
The main reason why the increase in consumption of instant noodles is worrying, health reasons aside, is due to the lifestyle we lead.
Think about it, this means that we are leading such hectic lives we find ourselves having to contend with meals on the go, or meals that are easy to prepare.
And to be honest, if you don’t have time for a meal, chances are you won’t have time for what’s really important in your life too – your family and loved ones.
On the other hand, if your business is dying, this might be the industry for you to switch to.
