Have you heard? There’s finally Starbucks in Westeros!
Or so we wish.
Starbucks in Westeros, Anyone?
Enter the world of Game of Thrones, where dragons and kings bask in all its medieval glory – and apparently, where the world’s first Starbucks chain is, according to Ms Bernie Caulfield, one of the executive producers of Game of Thrones.
On the fourth episode of the last season of Game of Thrones on Sunday (May 5), an unexpected cameo by none other than a Starbucks paper cup left fans and casual viewers alike in a laughing frenzy.
To some fans, perhaps it was more unexpected than Thor suddenly walking into the feast and demanding for a pint of beer.
A Familiar Sight
The easily recognisable white lid, cardboard body and round green logo appeared in a scene alongside Jon Snow and Daenerys Targayen at a feast in Winterfell, on the table in front of Daenerys – did she just order a casual Starbucks at a tavern?
It’s as bizarre as the visual of your great grandma casually sipping on a skinny low-fat ice latte in the kampong she grew up in.
Who knew Daenerys was such a basic Starbucks loving white girl?
But honestly, same. I can’t even imagine how they lived in a world without Starbucks in the past.
Apology
Ms Caulfield also apologised for the inap’prop’riate and accidental product placement in an interview with New York’s WNYC radio. “I can’t believe (it). Our onset prop people and decorators are so on it a 1000 per cent. We’re sorry!”
HBO added on, in good fashion, that the latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake.
Daenerys had actually ordered herbal tea.
Oookay.
Starbucks Jumping on Bandwagon
There’s no doubt that Starbucks was happy for the free publicity they got either, with the coffee franchise giant riding the publicity wave and commenting on Twitter: “TBH we’re surprised she didn’t order a Dragon Drink.”
A Dragon Drink was Starbucks’ summer menu addition of a bright pink dragon fruit and coconut milk concoction. Sounds just like Daenerys’ type, huh?
Memes Heaven
And as usual, when there’s a blunder on a TV show, especially one as prominent as Game of Thrones with over 30 million viewers in America alone, you bet the first thing everyone does is to take to social media to clown it and make memes in true millennial fashion.
These included photos of the supposed Starbucks store in Winterfell and jokes that Starbucks would be the next ruler of the throne.
Ride thru for a Starbucks? Ready my horse now!
All hail Starbucks.
Maybe next time we’ll get to see Jon Snow heating up some pop tarts too. Or have some Old Chang Kee curry puffs.
