Starhub Extends Cable Broadband Termination to 31 Aug As Many People Haven’t Switched to Fibre Yet

If you’re already using a fibre broadband connection in your house, then you must be thinking: Wait, cable broadband still exists? You’re referring to the ironic SCV MaxOnline cable connection that killed off 56k dial-up connection?

Yes, my dear old friend. That’s what we’re referring to, though it’s not called SCV MaxOnline, but simply cable broadband.

In Singapore, only Starhub provides this service. Speed is of course much slower, but it’s cheaper as well: for about $22 a month, you can have a wi-fi connection at home, though you’d of course need a router.

As a user myself, I can vouch that it’s good enough since I don’t play games online; it can stream Netflix well and I’m loving it.

But Starhub is creasing the cable broadband because it’s so yesterday: since early this year, I’ve been receiving SMSes from Starhub, telling me to switch to fibre broadband as cable broadband is ending its service on 30 June 2019.

Well, I’ve done so because no wi-fi = no life, but it turns out that not everyone’s as kiasu as me.

StarHub Extends Deadline of Cable to Fibre to End-August

Unsurprisingly, many cable users decided to make the change only in the last few days; which is about now.

And because there are too many applications, it resulted in an “order backlog”.

Also, Starhub is also working with NetLink Trust, a fibre network operator, to work on some homes that might require more time for installation.

They said, “As such, StarHub extended the cessation of its cable network to help all customers take advantage of the technology migration, rate protection of existing subscriptions and associated promotional offers… Customers can continue subscribing to cable services until fibre services are installed for them, or up to Sept 30, whichever comes earlier.”

Ah, damn it. If only I’ve waited so that I can still enjoy cheap cable connection…though the price is somewhat the same.

If you’re one of those cable users, you can call its dedicated hotline at 1800 829 9918 (8am to 9pm daily) or visit any StarHub shop. In fact, you should have also received an SMS that directs you to the nearest Starhub shop.

For my case, I did everything online because I’m high-tech like that.

In the meantime, do remember these dates: sign up before 31 August because the cable connecting will stop operating from 30 September (the one-month buffer is for the time to activate and install the new fibre connection as we can’t live one day without Internet).
