StarHub announced on 12 Aug 2025 that it has taken full ownership of MyRepublic’s broadband business in a S$105.2 million deal.
The acquisition marks the second major telecommunications consolidation in Singapore within just two days.
StarHub Broadband Business Acquisition Strengthens Market Position
StarHub acquired the remaining 49.9 per cent share of MyRepublic Broadband for S$94.3 million. The deal also includes over S$10.8 million for MyRepublic’s key operational assets and brand rights in Singapore.
The telco already held a controlling 50.1 per cent stake in MyRepublic’s broadband business since 2022. StarHub obtained regulatory approval from the Infocomm Media Development Authority in 2022 to acquire the majority stake.
The S$94.3 million payment will be offset against an existing S$74.2 million loan from StarHub to MyRepublic. StarHub will pay the remaining balance of S$31 million in tranches.
With the sale of its remaining broadband stake, MyRepublic retains only its virtual mobile business, which StarHub does not have any stake in.
Telco Consolidation Wave Follows Simba’s M1 Purchase
The StarHub-MyRepublic deal announcement came one day after Simba Telecom’s surprise purchase of M1’s telecommunications business. Market watchers had expected StarHub to make the M1 acquisition instead.
Asset manager Keppel sold M1’s telecom operations to operator Simba Telecom for an enterprise value of S$1.43 billion.
StarHub CEO Nikhil Eapen said the company is actively shaping the consolidation phase rather than simply watching it unfold. He noted that scale, quality, and resilience matter more than ever as the market shifts.
“Smaller players may find it harder to sustain, especially without robust platforms,” Eapen said. “Our role is to step up to provide the reliability, performance, and consistency that customers deserve at a time when they need it most.”
Eapen described the MyRepublic acquisition as “an acceleration” rather than just an acquisition. He said StarHub has “laid a strong foundation for growth” and can now “move faster, go further, and serve customers with even greater clarity and care” with full ownership.
As of the first quarter of 2025, StarHub had 577,000 broadband subscribers.
StarHub is listed on the Singapore Exchange mainboard.
