When things get stolen, it’s usually these few things: cash, bags, electronics.
Basically, anything valuable.
Yet in this theft case, none of these items was stolen. In fact, nothing valuable was even stolen—because of all things to steal, this man chose to steal 2 hangers.
I know, it’s a bit anticlimactic.
Man Stole 2 Hangers After Failing to Steal Clothes Rack
On Wednesday (26 May), a Facebook user, Ah Feng, uploaded on her Facebook a six-minute long video. The video was taken from a CCTV camera, and showed a theft incident that took place outside her unit.
The incident took place on 22 April around 12.50am, at a block of flats around Toa Payoh. According to Ah Feng, the area shown in the video is the place that she hangs her clothes outside her unit.
She also wrote that she usually chained her bicycle to her foldable iron clothes rack in the area.
In the video, a man and woman could be seen appearing together. After looking in the direction of the clothes-hanging area, the man can be seen walking up to the clothes rack in the area. Meanwhile, the woman can be seen standing to one side.
After what seems to be a moment of consideration, the man can then be seen attempting to take away the iron clothes rack.
That’s right—the clothes rack.
However, as he realises that the rack is chained to the bicycle and cannot be moved, the man can then be seen taking up the hangers on the clothes rack to have a closer look. In the video, he seemingly examines the clips on the hangers to check if they are in working condition.
At the end of the video, the man can be seen removing the mask clipped to one of the hangers, before stealing 2 hangers from the rack.
Ah Feng said in her post that the man had taken a fancy to her iron clothes rack. She added that the two hangers that were stolen were actually old hangers that she had been using for many years already—they weren’t worth much.
However, Ah Feng still contacted the police about this incident as she was angry that they two even stole old hangers.
When approached by Lianhe Zaobao, the police confirmed that a police report had been filed. Investigations are currently ongoing.
Ah Feng has since taken down the video from Facebook.
HDB Block Often Had Theft Cases
When residents were interviewed by reporters from Lianhe Zaobao, some of them recognised the couple in the video as residents who lived nearby. They reportedly would often walk their dog at the HDB void deck.
The resident who was interviewed by Lianhe Zaobao expressed that this block of HDB flats particularly often had cases of items being stolen. The stolen items included all sorts of things: shoes left in the corridor, the four-faced Buddha statues, even fruits that had been left out as ancestral offerings.
In her post, Ah Feng also wrote that the pair often set out at night, and that the resident’s items would also often disappear.
Coincidence? I think not.
