“To a mother, her child is her everything. She will give everything and stop at nothing, just to see her child happy”.
I was probably a 9 or 10-year-old brat when I first heard my teacher say this. It had a lasting impression on me, even until today. If not for my parents, I wouldn’t be where I am today and for that—I am eternally grateful.
Today, we’ll be looking at one such mother. A mother who is stopping at nothing to ensure that her daughter is eating properly.
For three years, an old lady in her 70s has been travelling from Toa Payoh to Bedok Reservoir Road daily, just to deliver lunch for her daughter.
According to Zaobao, the daughter was badly affected by the passing of her husband and is unwilling to take a single step out of the flat.
When the reporters from Zaobao went to the flat on 22 Feb to find out more, the neighbours said that the old lady was there at around 4 pm in the afternoon and she didn’t leave until 6 pm or so.
At around 4 pm on 24 Feb, the reporters made another trip to the flat just in time to see the old lady knocking on the door to the flat. She has been shouting so much that her voice has turned hoarse.
Despite her shouting and knocking, nobody is answering the door.
She then went to the void deck to take a break, resuming her knocking at around 6 pm, begging her daughter to open the door.
After 15 minutes, the door finally opened. A skinny woman then took the food from the old lady. The old lady then chatted to her daughter and watched her finish the food.
The old lady then left in half an hour, content that her daughter had finished the food.
The reporters proceeded to interview the old lady at the void deck. The old lady said:
“After the passing of her husband, she wouldn’t even go out by herself. If I don’t come here, she wouldn’t even leave the house for food.”
Normally, I would be talking about how unfilial the daughter is. However, considering the circumstances, I think it would be more appropriate for us to applaud the old lady for her motherly love.
Even when the entire world has seemingly abandoned you, you can be sure that your parents will stay by your side. Of course— I’m not referring to special circumstances. But let’s not go there today.
Remember, you don’t have to wait until Mother’s Day to show your love for your mother. A simple phone call telling her about your day is enough to make her day.
