Sometimes we read the news and lose all hope for humanity.
But not today!
A selfless stranger offered to help carry a wheel-chair bound elderly who was at least 80kg up two flight of stairs after the lift at Novena MRT station broke down.
I guess you can say that not all heroes wear capes.
Elderly Was A Double Amputee
On 17 December at around 9.40am, a STOMP contributor named Clarice shared how she and her mother had been one of several wheelchair users who were left stranded on the platform of Novena MRT station after they were informed that the lift was spoilt.
Wheelchair users who were able to walk took the escalator while the station staff helped to carry their wheelchair.
However, Clarice’s mother was a double amputee, hence that wasn’t an option to consider.
Station Staff Suggested Alternative Options
After approaching the station staff for help, they were informed that there were two options available for them.
They could either take the train to Toa Payoh and then take bus service 143 to TTSH or they could change the date for their medical appointment.
However, her mother was running late for her appointment.
And since Clarice had also taken leave to bring her mother to the hospital that day, both options weren’t ideal.
Gentleman Offered To Help
Initially, they had decided to get their helper to carry her with the support of the MRT staff as they said they were unable to carry passengers due to safety concerns.
But before they could carry her, a young gentleman came over and offered to carry her up the staircase.
Even though he was relatively small in size, he was able to carry Clarice’s mum who was at least 80kg.
She was unable to catch his name as he quickly returned to the platform to catch his train.
“Kudos to this young man!”, said Clarice.
Netizens Praise Young Man
The Facebook post by Legit Singapore has since gone viral with over 400 likes and 150 shares.
The comments section are filled with praises for the gentleman.
And this comment makes us reflect on the kindness of Singaporeans.
It doesn’t hurt to lend a helping hand to someone in need. So, the next time you see someone running in the rain without an umbrella, you can offer to share your umbrella.
Or if someone is short of a few cents and is unable to board the bus, look into your wallet and dig for a few cents to help the stranger.
It’s okay if you don’t get your umbrella or your money back because kind acts like these go a long way!
Have a good day everyone!
