Did you know that by industry convention, smartphones in Japan are unable to mute the camera’s shutter clicks even in silent mode?
Shutter sound is perpetually activated in Japan-sold iPhones regardless of the settings. Android models mostly rely on a prompt by the insertion of a Japanese SIM card.
This is one of the country’s effort to mitigate upskirt crimes, or in general cases of unsanctioned photo-taking, which are dishearteningly widespread in Japan.
Unfortunately, in light of multiple recent events, we seem to be facing the issue here in Singapore.
In last week alone, there were at least three incidents that concerned upskirt photos. They are: conviction of an earlier crime, another conviction of a repeated offender, and a harassment case that went violent.
Now, a teenager is facing charges for taking 21 upskirt videos in a single year.
And this time, the accused is a student and some of the victims are teachers.
Long List of Crimes
The 21-year-old’s perverse actions came to light one uneventful afternoon on 29 August 2018.
A female classmate borrowed the perpetrator’s mobile at school and stumbled upon a file containing photos taken while another female classmate was changing.
In shock, she alerted the school authority, who uncovered more lewd photos on the device and promptly filed a police report.
Investigators traced the perpetrator’s vile acts back to 2017. In September that year, he took upskirt photos of two girls seated across him at a McDonald’s in Bishan Park.
He employed similar methods on staircases and elevators from October 2017 to July 2018. During this period, his victims included three teachers and two unidentified females.
In March 2018, the perpetrator placed his phone on the floor of a polytechnic with the camera facing upwards to obtain more obscene footages.
In the same year, he began hiding his phone in his classroom to take photos of students getting changed. Two female classmates fell prey to the setup.
Committed the Offences as a Student
The perpetrator, a Singapore PR who moved here from Malaysia, was a secondary school student when he committed the offences.
The crimes took place between 2017 and 2018, during which he transferred from one unnamed institution to another.
He has since graduated and is found with 21 counts of insulting a woman’s modesty and one count of being in possession of obscene videos.
He will be facing ten charges; the remaining counts to be taken into consideration during sentencing.
