Student Didn’t Finish Food in Restaurant So She Gave All Her Pocket Money as a Tip With a Note

As Singaporeans would probably attest to, acts of kindness and appreciation are far and few between.

After all, we live in a fast-paced and competitive society that’s always out to win, and so oftentimes, people do not have the energy or mental capacity to exhibit a gesture of kindness.

“Being kind?” they scoff. “How does that help?”

Which is regrettably so, considering how an act of kindness benefits not only the beneficiary but the lender as well.

Good karma might be a myth, but the feeling of doing good is certainly existent.

And yet, that’s perhaps why it’s so heartwarming when they do happen because we’ve learnt to cherish their rarity.

And that’s even more so when it comes from a student of a younger generation than most of us.

It means that even as society moves on, some have not seen fit to lose sight of the bigger picture…

Of how the simplest act of appreciation… could potentially do wonders for someone.

Student Didn’t Finish Food in Restaurant So She Gave All Her Pocket Money as a Tip With a Note

On 19 July 2020, local eatery Chef Kang’s Prawn Noodle House posted an update on its Facebook page, detailing how a student had visited their store and left a note and tip when she was done.

A student. And you wonder how high-flying folks never see fit to leave even 10 cents on the table.

According to the post, a customer – who was wearing what seemed to be a CHIJ uniform – had visited the eatery with her mother and sister for a late lunch. She ordered a stone pot rice, while her mother and sister got a bowl of prawn noodles each.

After they were done, the student left a note and a tip. In the note, she raved over the eatery’s prawns and spare ribs and apologised for not finishing the rice as she needed to leave and was not very hungry to begin with.

She added that the food came in a big portion and was “totally worth it”.

In the post-script section, she wrote that it was a shame to waste the food. As such, she left a tip, which was apparently her pocket money for the day.

In a time when every kid seems obsessed with Renegade, Renegade, it’s more than heartening to see that such acts of appreciation do still exist in today’s society.

What a touching moment. What a time to be alive.

Eatery Very Grateful

The eatery then added its two cents’ to the thoughtful gesture.

According to them, the epidemic has proved a real threat to their business, and they only barely pulled through by upgrading their food and services. The student’s gesture, in turn, made their efforts feel “all worth it”.

“We also feel proud to know that young children these days have been brought up and nurtured to have such kindness,” the eatery wrote.

They then conveyed a wish to thank not only the student but also her parents and teachers for teaching her well.

And honestly, what better than a free lunch as a form of gratitude?

“We would like to thank not only her for her caring actions but also her parents and teachers who played vital roles in inculcating such values in her,” they wrote.

“In order to show our appreciation, we would like to invite you, your parents and your teacher for a free lunch. All food and beverages ordered will be on the house. Please contact me by clicking the WhatsApp button on our Facebook.”

They say that an act of kindness goes a long way.

From the looks of things, it certainly has.

Some have also professed their undying support for the eatery…

Which, if you think about it, only happened because of the tip in the first place.

Truly, this takes the notion of ‘kindness goes a long way’ to a whole new level.

And it seems that the eatery has since gotten a hold of the student’s parent too.

To think that even the student’s parents and teacher would benefit from her act of selfless sincerity… Kindness doesn’t just go a long way.

It sure as heck begets kindness too.

Now, isn’t that a refreshing change from all the usual “youthful stories” you hear on social media?

Like the youths who thought it’s wise to spit from the top of a shopping mall at people eating below…in the midst of Covid-19?

Or the youths who decided that drinking from a bottle and putting it back on the shelf is a “cool” move?
