Singlehood has been a central theme in my life, followed by a fog of existential crisis not too far behind.
I have always imagined and joked about how I would die—living alone in a crappy apartment and I would be too sick to even see the doctor and while I drag on my last cigarette, I will be dead.

And about two days later, my dog would probably eat my face off coz it’s too hungry.
And then a week later, my neighbours will be welcomed by a pungent smell which happened to be my half-eaten rotting body.
What a way to go.
Anyhow, my macabre imagination might actually come true if I don’t start dating.
Why?
According to reports, loneliness is deadlier than obesity.
Why loneliness can kill
Researchers in the US analysed 218 studies about health effects of loneliness and social isolation.
Social isolation can increase your chances of dying by 50% compared to obesity, which is only at 30%.

Why does isolation kill tho?
Lead author and professor of psychology at Brigham Young University, Dr Julianne Holt-Lunstad said: “Feeling lonely is thought to make people feel worse mentally and physically.”
“Being connected to others socially is widely considered a fundamental human need, crucial to both well-being and survival,” she added.

She also mentioned that there is evidence that social isolation and loneliness can significantly increase the risk of premature mortality.
To a certain extent, I do agree.
Think about it, when we were kids, isolation was used as a form of punishment and on top of that, if you’re alone and sick, chances of your dog eating your face off is pretty high (FYI, there is no scientific evidence to back up the last point).

So while you’re scrolling through your social media news feed alone, that obese couple who posted their 357th food post is going to outlive you.
