Preetipls’ brother, Subhas Nair, is back in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
He’s been sentenced to six weeks in jail for trying to promote ill will among different racial and religious groups, using his online posts.
His name has risen in popularity for controversies like the rap video which caused him and his sister to gain national attention back in 2019.
So, what exactly did he do this time?
Preetipls’ Brother, Subhas Nair, Sentenced to 6 Weeks’ Jail for Attempt to Promote Ill Will Among Racial & Religious Groups
Nair has always been known for speaking his mind about race and religion, which can be pretty touchy subjects in Singapore’s diverse multiracial and multireligious society.
The Singaporean rapper got into hot water when he made some statements between July 2019 and March 2021, where he compared different races and religions.
The judge and the prosecution both argued that in today’s world of social media and the Internet, spreading these kinds of messages can do a lot of harm, reaching a big audience and causing trouble not just among specific groups but in society as a whole.
According to CNA, Nair plans to appeal both his conviction and the sentence.
The Four Charges Against Subhas Nair
One of the charges against Nair stemmed from a video by City Revival Church founder Jaime Wong and influencer Joanna Theng, who linked the gay pride movement to Satan.
Nair responded to the video, saying: “If two Malay Muslims made a video promoting Islam and saying the kinds of hateful things these Chinese Christians said, ISD (Internal Security Department) would have been at the door before they even hit ‘upload’.”
Another charge was about an Instagram post he made in response to a news article on Chan Jia Xing, who was involved in a murder case at Orchard Towers in July 2019.
But the most famous charge against Nair came from a YouTube video where he and his sister, Preetipls, performed a song with lyrics that denigrated another race.
Those lyrics were, “Chinese people always out here f***ing it up.”
Nair had already been given a two-year conditional warning from the police for this incident, whereby he won’t be charged for that offence if he did not commit any crime during this period.
Nut he didn’t stop making controversial comments online.
Consequences of His Actions
Now, the consequences of his actions are that he’s been sentenced to six weeks in jail.
The prosecutors wanted six weeks, while his defence lawyer asked for 20 days.
The judge pointed out that when looking at past cases, it’s clear that jail sentences are typically handed down for similar offenses. He also rejected the defence’s claim that Nair’s case should be considered less severe as he didn’t use racial slurs or derogatory language.
Nair plans to ask for bail while he appeals the decision, and some of his supporters, including his sister, were there for his hearing.
In Singapore, trying to create tension between different racial or religious groups can land you in jail for up to three years, a fine, or both. So, it’s a pretty serious deal.
What was the Subhas Nair and Preetipls Saga In 2019?
Here’s a quick rundown of the Nair and Preetipls saga that happened back in 2019.
NETS released an advertisement for their E-Pay campaign with four characters to represent the different races.
The catch? They casted one Chinese actor to play all three races which caused backlash among netizens. To no surprise, the advertisement got slammed for stereotyping the other races and for using brownface.
This caused Preetipls to release a rap video in response to the NETS advertisement, which contained some pretty strong language. Some folks saw it as an attack on the Chinese race because of the intense lyrics.
Since that video, things started to get messy for the sibling duo.
