We might already be out of Circuit Breaker for 11 days but the courts are still busy punishing people who broke the rules during that period, which is precisely the reason why AGC needs prosecutorial discretion.

So many things have happened over the past few weeks but do you remember the “educated” lady at Sun Plaza?

Here’s A Brief Refresher:

Sun Plaza Lady shot into infamy when she refused to wear a mask when at the shopping mall on 29 Apr 2020.

When a safe distancing ambassador spoke to her, she was extremely sarcastic, using bigly flowery words that even MP Sis Flower wouldn’t use to insult the man.

She also told him to take off his mask when talking to her.

On 7 May at around 2pm, she was back at the mall again.

This time, when told to scan her NRIC for contact tracing, she threw it down on the table and verbally abused the staff.

When told she has to leave, she simply walked into the mall without scanning her NRIC. When a policewoman attempted to arrest her, she resisted and injured the officer.

Sarcastic During Court

Even when in court, she wasn’t cooperative as well, and many deemed her unnecessarily sarcastic.

According to Yahoo News, when Kasturi Govindasamy Retnamsamy, 40 was asked by the district judge whether she would be engaging a lawyer, she said: “I think I would be the best counsel for myself”.

And moving on…

She added, “If I’m not claiming trial, I will not be here”.

Well, she returned to court on 12 June and let’s say, her attitude took a 180-degree turn.

On 12 June, she returned to court and pleaded guilty to one count each of:

  • harassment
  • using criminal force on a policewoman
  • making an offence under the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) Act

During the course of the trial, she said that she was “in a lot of pain” and has “multiple personalities” problems.

She asked: “Even if I were to plead guilty, what evidence is there that I would be given proper help?”

The judge told her that if she was proven to have mental issues, she’ll serve a Mandatory Treatment Order (MTO) for mental help.

After hearing that, she admitted to the charges.

Basically, an MTO simply means instead of staying, say, 6 months at Changi chalet, you will go to a mental health institute like IMH for compulsory sessions with a psychiatrist.

It can either be an out-patient treatment (stays home, goes for sessions) or in-patient treatment (stay at the institute).

After completing an MTO, the offender will have the related offences wiped from their records.

Sun Plaza lady will be sentenced on 26 June and three other counts of harassment will be taken into consideration during the sentencing.

The judge has called for an assessment to see her suitability for MTO.
