I’m sure many people are big fans of prawns, after all, they’re pretty good no matter whether they’re cooked with sauces, battered and fried with salted egg yolk, or even in seafood soups.
But, eating it when it’s cooked and preparing it to be cooked are two different things. While I’m someone who loves doing the former, I’d usually pass up the opportunity to do the latter to someone else.
Sadly, this man had to do the latter himself and in an unfortunate incident, lost most of his finger.
Yep, and this was all because he got pricked by a fresh prawn a day prior.
Not The Same Kind Of Prick
According to a Facebook post that was published by the victim’s friend, the victim had bought fresh prawns from a wet market.
When he went home to wash and clean them, he was accidentally pricked.
If you’re one who regularly prepares prawns for cooking, you would know that getting pricked by fresh prawns is a common occurrence.
Since the victim has been pricked numerous times before, he didn’t think too much of the prick and continued preparing the prawns for cooking.
However, things were clearly not the same.

After a day, he noticed that his finger turned black and he was running a temperature.
Warning: Graphic content ahead.
He was immediately worried, as anyone would be, and rushed down to a 24-hour clinic in Toa Payoh to get it checked.
The doctors there referred him to the A&E department of a hospital instead. So off he went and once he arrived, he was scheduled to have surgery to cut off most of his index finger that same evening.
He had to stay in the hospital for a week and spend two days in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
So what exactly was wrong?
Infected By The Prick
Turns out, the victim’s wound was infected and he was attacked by a flesh-eating bacteria.

This usually happens when bacteria enter the body through broken skin.
He was lucky though because according to his doctor, he would have had to amputate his entire arm or worse, died, if he had left his finger alone for another day.
According to the scans, the bacteria could have travelled very quickly towards his armpit and moved towards other parts of his body if he had not acted fast enough.
Lesson To Be Learned
The post ends off with the victim warning everyone and their family members to take precautions when handling raw seafood like prawns.
It is also important not to dismiss any pricks as nothing because it could be something very severe like this man’s case.

So while prawns are delicious, please still be careful when preparing them because they can be equally deadly.
