SUSS (UniSIM) Students’ Exam Voided ‘Coz Lecturers Leaked Questions to Some Students

I have a fear, a horrible fear.

Forget all your ghost-faced assassins, clowns in drains and spirits that breathe into your neck while you sleep, because this, this is the real shit. I’m talking, of course, about…

Mugging 24/7 for a paper, taking it and chilling out only to discover days later that the exam had been voided for some reason and I have to retake it.

Yes, my dear ladies and gentlemen. Fear doesn’t get any more horrifying than that.

As such, you can only imagine my fear, apprehension and turmoil all bunched together like a Maki-san rice roll when I read the headline.

Geezus, I’m from SUSS! What’s this shit! I’m not going back for another exam. NO! NOOOOOOOOO.

Well thankfully it proved to be a misconception, and my results are mercifully spared (though I’m pretty sure they’re on the brink of failure anyway).

The same, however, cannot be expressed for these poor students, who had sat for the FIN303 Financial Management exam held last week.

What happened?!

According to Channel NewsAsia, the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), previously known as SIM University (or UniSIM), has voided an examination, upon discovering that a lecturer had leaked questions and solutions during revision classes.

Incidentally, a total of 590 part-time and full-time students at the school were affected.

In reply to some official probing from Channel NewsAsia, a SUSS spokesperson expressed on Monday (26 Nov) that the school had discovered (following the conduction of the FIN303 Financial Management exam on 20 Nov) that several students had actually been made aware of questions and solutions.

And as the “integrity of the examination assessment (had) been compromised and to ensure a level playing field for all students who sat for the examination,” the exam was eventually voided.

But wait, what’s gonna happen to the poor students now?

Well, suffice it to say that it wouldn’t be a pleasing sight.

Apparently, students will now have to opt between the acceptance of their Overall Continuous Assessment Score (OCAS) for their final grade; or take a supplementary examination paper that’s scheduled for 4 Dec.

In elaboration, the OCAS consists of marks from pre-course quizzes, class participation and assignments. Usually, the overall grade comprises both the OCAS and the final exam combined together.

Also, early investigations have begun, and the identity of the lecturer, who had leaked the questions and solutions in the first place, had been uncovered.

“A preliminary investigation revealed that an associate faculty was involved in the premature release of the questions and solutions during two extra revision classes,” an SUSS spokesperson said.

“We will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against the lecturer, including termination of service, once investigations are completed.

Response

Generally, feedback was pretty negative.

But then again, that’s a given, especially in circumstances such as this one.

However, let’s take a step back: if you’re a student, would you be happy at a lecturer who gives you the exam questions? #justsaying

Tough luck

To all the affected students, sincere condolences. Being a student myself, I know first-hand how damning the revelation must’ve been.

As such, I earnestly hope that such incidents will be curbed, because I’m gonna admit it:

I’m not studying another 3 days and 3 nights just to take a paper I thought I was done with.

Screw dat.
