The model received propofol, a fast-acting sedative nicknamed “milk of amnesia” due to its milky white appearance. Propofol carries significant risks, including a slowed heartbeat, which can be fatal without careful monitoring.

Cai’s heartbeat stopped after receiving the sedative. Medical teams rushed her to the hospital where doctors declared her brain dead. After 19 days of emergency treatment, her family made the difficult decision to withdraw life support.

Prior to the family’s final decision, Cai’s friend had pleaded with her brother not to withdraw life support.

Doctor Under Investigation as Drip Rate Becomes Key Focus

Police and prosecutors conducted an autopsy on 13 Jun 2025. They have listed Dr Wu Shao Hu as a defendant in the case.

During questioning, Wu testified that he had set the original intravenous drip rate at one drop per second. Cai complained this was too slow and requested an increased rate. Wu refused her request, believing a faster flow would pose life-threatening risks.

While Wu was out handling other clinic matters, nursing staff called to report Cai’s declining vital signs. He provided emergency instructions over the phone and rushed back to the clinic. Upon his return, Wu discovered the drip rate had increased to five drops per second.

Wu maintains that he does not know who adjusted the IV flow rate from its original setting. Cai is believed to have fallen into a coma after receiving a large dose of medication over a short period.

The Da’an District Police Investigation Team searched the clinic on 1 Jun 2025. Officers seized mobile phones belonging to several doctors and nursing staff as evidence. They brought Wu and the on-duty nurse to the police station for questioning.

The clinic’s surveillance footage has allegedly been deleted. Police and prosecutors remain skeptical of Wu’s account and are continuing their investigation to establish the facts.

The Taipei District Prosecutor’s Office investigated charges including negligent homicide and violations of medical laws. According to Taiwan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare, propofol must be administered in an operating room or intensive care unit with proper monitoring.

An anaesthesiology chief cited by Taiwan News confirmed that propofol requires administration in controlled medical environments with appropriate monitoring equipment due to its potentially fatal side effects.
