A primary school teacher in Taoyuan City, Taiwan, has been sentenced to 17 years and 6 months in prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting her 12-year-old student multiple times in 2020, resulting in pregnancy and the birth of a child.

Sexual Assault Case Leads to Birth of Child and Long Prison Sentence

Between 25 Feb and 23 Jun 2020, the teacher sexually assaulted the Standard 6 student nine times during lunch breaks and class time at school.

She became pregnant in May 2020 and gave birth to a baby boy the following year.

The illicit relationship was only discovered when the boy’s father found out about the abuse and immediately contacted police authorities.

During police questioning, the teacher attempted to shift blame onto the student, claiming he had initiated the relationship and taken advantage of her. However, prosecutors rejected these claims.

The young victim told investigators that he was an unwilling participant, particularly during the first two instances of sexual intercourse.

He stated that he was scared and did not want the sexual contact to occur.

Court Ruling and Teacher’s Appeal Against “Heavy” Sentence

The Taoyuan District Court convicted the teacher on two counts of forcing sexual intercourse with a minor under age 14 and seven counts of having sex with a minor.

In addition to the prison sentence, the court permanently barred her from holding any teaching position again under the Teachers Law.

She was subsequently fired from her job.

Claiming the sentence was “too heavy,” the teacher filed an appeal in 2024.

After an initial evidence verification hearing, the appeals court held a second hearing on 22 Apr 2024, which concluded within just 30 minutes.

Following this brief hearing, both the teacher and her attorney quickly left the courthouse without responding to media questions.

The teacher’s appeal process is currently ongoing as she contests the length of her prison sentence.
