Purchasing takeaway food, especially from a new eatery, is always a risky venture.

It could turn out to be a delectable delight that excites your taste beds and leaves you satisfied, but it could also end with you pooping out your vital organs.

Now, diners have to be wary of another, equally-explosive disaster when they eat takeaway food: your house burning down.

Takeaway Grilled Fish with Pan Caught Fire in Woodlands

One couple’s takeaway dinner was a little fierier than they had anticipated, as their takeaway pan burst into flames.

The incident occurred on Sunday (16 Aug) in their apartment along 1 Woodlands Road, according to Lianhe Wanbao.

Speaking to the Chinese daily, the man said his wife had brought home a grilled fish dish which she bought from a shop in Serangoon.

Unlike your typical takeaway meal, however, this one came with its own portable warming kit.

The kit comprised an aluminium foil tray to contain the fish, a cardboard stand, and chafing fuel.

The contraption is used to keep the fish hot as you dig into it.

So the man did what he was supposed to; he assembled the kit and lit up the chafing fuel to warm up the fish, before walking away to have a cigarette.

But then he smelt some smoke, which was strange considering he hadn’t even lit up his cigarette yet.

When he turned around, he saw that the portable pan was on fire.

CCTV footage from the couple’s living room managed to capture the fiery incident:

The man’s wife quickly soaked a towel and handed it to her husband, and they attempted to put out the fire three times by covering it with the wet towel.

But just like that flying cockroach in your bedroom, the fire refused to die, as the heat dried out the towel.

They then flung the blazing contraption into the bathroom and gave it a nice shower, which eventually extinguished the flames.

However, they were worried that the kit could catch fire again, so the couple called the police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).

Eatery Has Since Responded

The owner of the grilled fish shop said he had started providing portable warming kits to customers who ordered their fish for takeaway ever since the circuit breaker was imposed.

He said that other owners in the same business have done the same and that this is the first time he’s heard of such an incident.

“Everyone uses this pan, we’ve never heard of such an incident till today,” he shared.

Nevertheless, he said he intends to improve the design of the warming kit, with the help of his employees.

As for diners, you now have a dilemma:

Be content with a lukewarm grilled fish, or heat it up for a more enjoyable dining experience, despite the risk of it burning your house down.

I’m still on the fence.
