While many of us were still sleeping this morning, a horrific car crash occurred in Tanjong Pagar.

Today, many of us woke up to the news of the accident that took five lives; now, more details about the crash have been reported.

Here are 10 new facts you probably didn’t know about.

New Video Allegedly Shows What Happened Before the Crash

This afternoon, a video that purportedly showed what happened before the crash made its round on social media.

As of now, there’s no concrete evidence to prove that this was the car that crashed this morning; however, in several images posted on social media related to the incident, a lady wearing the same clothes could be seen.

Police Said The Car Has Sped Along Tanjong Pagar Road & Crashed into a Vacant Shophouse

The police said that preliminary investigations show that the car has sped along Tanjong Pagar Road before colliding into a shophouse and catching fire.

Investigations are still ongoing.

Police Cordon Was Lifted at 3:10pm

The accident had occurred at around 5:40am, and initially, only 200m of Tanjong Pagar Road was cordoned off.

They then expanded the cordon to block off the whole of Cook Street and more of Duxton Hill, and only lifted off the cordon at 3:10pm; almost 10 hours after the accident.

Injured Woman Was Fiancée of One of the Deceased

If you’ve skimmed through headlines, you’d wonder why there were six people in a car, since five had passed away while one was injured.

There were only five people in the car, and after the crash, a woman, who was allegedly the fiancée of the driver, had rushed over to try to save the people trapped in the burning car.

However, she injured herself doing that and suffered severe burns on 80% of her body.

Woman Now in Critical Condition

The woman, 26-year-old Raybe Oh Siew Huey, is currently fighting for her life in ICU in Singapore General Hospital.

She had reportedly applied for a flat with her fiancé recently. A former SIA air stewardess, the 26-year-old also sang getai occasionally.

The Car is a BMW M4 Coupe That Cost Almost Half a Million Dollars

The car that crashed is a BMW M4 Coupe.

Unlike other mainstream BMW cars, the M4 is a high-performance sportscar, with the M standing for “motorsport”. Here in Singapore, the car can cost up to $423K.

In comparison, the most luxury BMW car in the market, the BMW 7 Series, cost up to $455k.

Driver of the Car is a 29YO Who Allegedly Worked as a Senior Financial Services Manager

The driver of the car is 29-year-old Jonathan Leong, and he reportedly worked for Aviva Financial Advisers as a senior financial services manager.

According to his social media profiles, he graduated from RMIT University at the SIM Global Education campus with an economics and finance degree.

Before the pandemic, he had gone to the US with one of the people in the car.

1 of the Victims is the Co-Founder of Bober Tea

One of the victims is Eugene Yap, the co-founder of homegrown bubble tea chain Bober Tea.

Back in 2018, the 29-year-old had started the first Bober Tea outlet in Bishan with two friends (not involved in the accident), and now, the brand has 8 outlets in Singapore, with franchises also opening in Manila and California.

2 of the Victims Had Posed with Various Sports Cars in Their Social Media Accounts

The other three deceased are Gary Wong Hong Chieh, 29, Elvin Tan Yong Hao, 28, and Teo Qi Xiang, 26.

According to social media posts, Jonathan, Eugene and Gary were long-time friends.

Both Eugene and Jonathan had posted various images of sportscars and supercars on their social media profiles.

Another Car Caught Fire at Upper Thomson Road But It’s Unrelated to This Incident

This evening, another car caught fire.

At about 6:50pm, a car caught fire along upper Thomson Road. Despite footage of the car being covered in flames, no one was injured and the fire was extinguished by the SCDF with a water jet.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
