If there’s one thing Singapore is known for, it’s how relatively clean the country is.
Till this day, our homeland is still one of the only places I dare to drink tap water in.
Thank you, dear gahmen.

While it’s obviously safer to drink boiled or bottled water regardless, we at least sort of have an alternative in an emergency.
The army guys at Tekong though, not so much.
Contamination Crisis
The last thing you want to hear is that you don’t have water after training.
According to MSNews, several posts from Twitter saw people complaining about the lack of clean water in Pulau Tekong.

I applaud your attempts at optimism, though.

This obviously didn’t sit well with anyone.
Considering Tekong is already far away from the mainland, it would be trouble if clean water supply ran out.
So on 21 November, the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) issued the following statement online.

According to the post, “discoloured tap water” was found in parts of the Basic Military Training Centre (BMTC) on Pulau Tekong Island.
At the time of the post, they also stated that alternative methods of water were being distributed for the soldiers there.
If you look at it from another standpoint, it’s more than just water.
You need water to cook as well, so that would’ve definitely affected the meals eaten inside the camp as well. Tragedy.

PUB Steps In
Of course, this usually calls for help from the Public Utilities Board (PUB) as well.
PUB received the reports of discoloured water from BMTC at 7.20 am on 20 November. Officers then went onsite immediately to assist and carry out flushing of the water network.

They’ve deployed water wagons to provide temporary water supply and collected water samples for testing.
As of this writing, the cause of the incident has not been identified. Rest assured that PUB and BMTC are working together to solve the case as soon as possible.
And I do hope for all the soldiers’ sake it will be fast. Training without proper hydration and food to replenish energy would be hell on earth.
