Imagine you having a confrontation with another driver in a car park. It might just be another Tuesday for you, but for Mr Wang, a 47-year-old chef, it led to repeated vandalism instead.

Here’s what happened.

A Normal Incident in a Car Park

The incident began on 15 August in a public housing estate parking lot on Ang Mo Kio Avenue 31, where Mr Wang encountered a taxi from Strides Mobility blocking his way.

Mr Wang told Shin Min Daily News that he politely requested the taxi driver to move slightly backward to allow him enough space to turn right into the second floor of the parking lot.

However, the taxi driver ignored his request.

Mr Wang said the taxi driver just pointed at the space in front and said, “Can’t fit in ah’, and then ignored him.

Angered by the driver’s response, Mr Wang confronted the taxi driver by parking his car at the exit, blocking the taxi from leaving. What followed was an unexpected maneuver by the taxi driver.

“He reversed up the slope, and I was also going up the slope, so we ended up facing each other as we both drove up,” Mr Wang said.

After reaching the second floor, Mr Wang quickly found a parking spot, and the taxi driver left the scene. Mr Wang thought the incident was over and did not dwell on it.

Escalating Tensions: Repeated Alleged Vandalism

In the three months following the parking lot incident, Mr Wang’s car was vandalised not once, not twice, but a whopping five times.

He suspected the taxi driver was the culprit after reviewing footage from his dashcam, which showed the taxi and its driver near his car.

This suspicion led Mr Wang to file a police report and seek assistance from a mediation centre, as well as lodge a complaint with SMRT, the parent company of Strides Mobility.

“The mediator asked if I was willing to reconcile, but I refused. I want him to receive the punishment he deserves, so now I am waiting for the police to conduct their investigation,” Mr Wang stated. He also reported the matter to the media outlet Mothership.

SMRT stated that the matter had been handed over to the police and they were awaiting further developments. The police confirmed that they had received a report and that the investigation was ongoing.
