Picture this:
You’re a student in an all-girls’ school, and you’ve been acing every single aspect there is: behaviour, attire, grades, etc.
“Such a great daughter,” your mum once sniffed. “Thank goodness you take after me and not your loser of a dad.”

“But Mum,” you wanna say. “I’m not that great.”
Something happened before.
For just a few days ago, your school had been conducting a routine attire check when a teacher started unbuttoning your uniform to check the colour of your bra strap.
Why, you remember wondering, distinctly mortified. Why is this happening to me? But you’re not the only one; other girls faced it as well, and their faces all painted the same expression:
Bewilderment.
“Why did this happen to me?” you wonder.
Controversial attire check
Now just to clarify; the personal account above is entirely fictional. As it is, I’ve no idea how the students in question felt at that point.
However, despite my ‘fabrication’, one thing’s for certain.

A school did conduct a uniform check, and a teacher did proceed to check the colour of bra straps during the inspection.
As it is, this is how it all went down.
According to Chinese daily Shin Min Daily News, a female teacher, believed to be the Secondary 4-year head, had unbuttoned students’ uniforms to verify the colour of their bra straps during the attire check.
Apparently, Nanyang Girls’ High students are permitted to wear only white or beige undergarments.
Having supposedly done the attire check on behalf of the male form teacher, the teacher allegedly undid the collar buttons of students’ attires and pulled out their bra straps.

Yeah I can see that face you’re pulling off right now:
An issue of apology
Following the revelation, NYGH’s head of relations and heritage Zhang Bo stated that a female teacher’s approach in running a recent routine attire check “had caused some students to feel uncomfortable”. This was in response to queries from The Straits Times on Tuesday (29 Jan).
He also stated that the principal has since sent an email (verified to have been sent last Thursday (24 Jan) by Shin Min) to all parents to “clarify the matter and reassure them”.
As it is, Mr Zhang reiterated NYGH’s attire policy, which aims to educate students to be neat and presentable. He also spoke about guidelines, which revolve around students’ general grooming and full attire.
“The school is committed to establishing a nurturing and conducive learning environment for all students,” Mr Zhang said.

The school has spoken to its students and is currently taking care of the affected girls. The teacher in question has also expressed regret for her actions.
Social media & alumni accounts
Prior to the apology, several students actually took the incident online, lamenting about the way the spot checks were conducted.
Most of the postings have, however, since been removed.
According to The Straits Times, a 19-year-old former member of NYGH, who declined to be named, has expressed the lack of such uniform checks when she was still attending the school.
However, teachers would issue ‘verbal warnings’ if students were spotted wearing undergarments of other colours.
So, for you guys who think that the DM is picking on you for your “long hair”, remember this: it’s not as bad.
