Teck Lee LRT Station, Which Has Remained Closed Since It Was Completed in 2005, Finally Opens

If you stay around Punggol, you might have walked past Teck Lee LRT station in the past couple of years and wondered: “What is this doing here? Waste of space sia.” After all, the station was closed for nearly 20 years after its completion.

But now, the Teck Lee LRT station has finally opened its gantries to Singaporeans! Here’s all you need to know about it.

Teck Lee LRT Station Finally Opens Nearly 20 Years After Its Completion

On Thursday (15 August), Singaporeans who frequently commute using the Punggol LRT line might have spotted a new station on the LRT line map — the Teck Lee LRT station.

While the Teck Lee LRT station has remained closed since it was first completed in 2005, the station has finally opened as part of the progressive opening of the Punggol LRT line.

Teck Lee LRT Station to Serve Students at New SIT Campus and Punggol Digital District

As it turns out, the authorities wanted to hold off on the station’s opening until the surrounding area was developed.

Currently, if you search “Teck Lee LRT station” on Google Maps, this is the satellite view you’ll see of the area surrounding the station. For reference, the pin-drop indicates the location of Teck Lee LRT station:

Of course, the satellite view isn’t up to date, but it’s the best way you can get an idea of how the area around the LRT station looked back then — it’s very different from the satellite views of built-up areas surrounding other MRT and LRT stations.

Now, the area is a lot more developed than you see in the map above, mostly thanks to new developments such as the new SIT campus and Punggol Digital District.

Huh? Isn’t SIT at Dover?

Well, you’re half-correct. SIT’s main campus is currently located at Dover Drive, where classes for SIT and joint degree programmes are held. SIT also has five satellite campuses located across Singapore within the grounds of a Polytechnic, including Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Nanyang Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic and Temasek Polytechnic.

However, from September 2024, SIT will be consolidating all six of its campus locations and progressively moving into the new SIT Punggol Campus.

With Teck Lee LRT station just nearby the new campus, SIT students moving to the new campus can rest assured that they won’t have to take a long walk through ulu areas to get to school.

The SIT Campus is located in the broader Punggol Digital District, which is still undergoing development. The district, which is expected to generate 28,000 high-tech jobs, is only a short walk from the Teck Lee LRT station.

In the same way many Singaporeans have noticed that the Tan Kah Kee MRT station was built mainly to serve students from Hwa Chong Institution, it appears that Teck Lee LRT station is built mainly to serve SIT students and those expecting to work at the Punggol Digital District.

In fact, the walk from Teck Lee LRT station to the business park in the Punggol Digital District is only four minutes long. There are even covered linkways!

Shiok.

And if you’re looking for any hints of how crowded the LRT station will be, according to Mr Jeffrey Sim, group chief executive of SBS Transit, which operates the Sengkang-Punggol LRT line, the station’s projected usage will be “in tandem with the developments around the area,”

So, what do you think of the new LRT station?
