When you tell your parents that you’re heading out on the road with your bicycle or motorcycle, many of them would be understandably concerned.
You may be a safe rider, but we can’t control the actions of other motorists on the road.
What’s more, bicycles and motorbikes do not have the large protective cover of a car or truck, and are more likely to come out worse after an accident.
According to the Annual Vehicle Statistics 2020 published by the LTA, there are around 140,783 motorcycles on Singapore’s roads – around 4.5 times fewer than cars.
Yet, despite this discrepancy, statistics from the Singapore Police Force show that motorcyclists/pillion riders made up about 60% of traffic fatalities in the first half of 2020 alone.
More recently, cyclists have also been getting into accidents with other vehicles on the road.
Sadly, a recent accident claimed the life of a young teenager.

49YO Cyclist Dies After Collision With Shuttle Bus in NTU Last Night
In early May this year, a cyclist at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) died after a collision with one of the university’s shuttle buses.
The cyclist, a 49-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
The incident happened along Nanyang Crescent, just before Nanyang Drive.
The woman was cycling with a friend around the NTU campus when she collided with the shuttle bus.
The male friend said he was riding in front of her when the accident occurred.
They were going to use the zebra crossing to get to the other side of the road when the woman fell.
The bus, which was headed towards her, couldn’t avoid her, he said.
At the time, Safe Cycling Task Force president Steven Lim reminded cyclists to familiarise themselves with traffic rules and plan their route properly before riding on the road.
