What do you do when someone has not returned the money you lent them? Would you drop them a WhatsApp message as a gentle reminder?

Perhaps, if they’ve taken a tad too long to give you your money back, you might send yet another WhatsApp message, this time with undertones of impatience.

As a last resort, you might decide to post on their Facebook feed “O$P$”.

But something not a lot of us would do is show up at their doorstep with a Samurai Sword in hand and threaten to stab them.

A 17-year-old boy named Muhammad Alif Mustaffa was upset that an 18-year-old boy owed his brother $100, so he decided to confront him at his doorstep in September.

He decided it would be a good idea to bring along a Samurai Sword for intimidation purposes. He probably thought it would quicken the process and get him his brother’s money back.

Muhammad Alif Mustaffa admitted to one charge of criminal intimidation on Thursday, 2 January.

He unsheathed the 27cm sword outside the victim’s house in Jurong East and threatened to use the weopen on the older boy if he refused to come out of the house.

He said, “Come down with us, if not I stab you.”

One of Alif’s friends had reminded him on the day that the victim, Muhammad Yasin Danial Rezuan owed his brother $100.

Alif then asked four of his friends, 17-21 years old to accompany him to Yasin’s house as he confronted him. He also brought the samurai sword along thinking that it would scare him into repaying the money.

At the void deck, they bumped into Yasin’s friend and told him to tell Yasin to come down. The friend then sent Yasin a message but didn’t receive a reply.

Thus, they went up to the unit and yelled for him to come out. Yasin then opened the gate.

Alif’s friends began to shout at him about their own personal problems against him, while Alif unsheathed his sword out of anger and “directed it at Yasin”, followed by his verbal threat.

Unsurprisingly, Yasin became frightened and told Alif that he needed five minutes to use the toilet. He promptly closed the door of his house and called the police.

Shortly after, the group saw the police cars entering the car park and ran away. However, they were later tracked down and arrested.

Alif’s Past Offences

Alif was sent to a juvenile home in 2017 for committing house trespass and theft. Thus, he may face imprisonment for his current charge.

However, his young age prompted Deputy Public Prosecutor Angela Ang to call for a probation suitability report.

Alif himself has asked to be placed on probation instead of receiving jail time. He told the District Judge, “My mother is not working. I am the only… support for my mother.”

District Judge Seah has agreed to the probation suitability report to be prepared and adjourned the matter to 30 January for sentencing.
