There is a lot to love about fusion food, food that combines two or more cultures into one dish and allows us to taste the best of both worlds.
Or the worst, depending on how you “fuse” them.
More often than not, fusion dishes actually turn out to be pretty tasty, like the popular Nasi Lemak burger sold in McDonald’s a while ago. We’ve also had things like Laksa pasta, and Chilli Crab pizza.
As the years go by, people are starting to become more creative and experimental when it comes to fusion food.
And the latest, slightly questionable, creation that we have is teh tarik carbonara.
I’ll be honest, I’m not feeling so great about this one.
Malaysian Man Comes Up with “Carbonara Teh Tarik”
A Malaysian man recently took to Instagram to share his recipe for “Carbonara Teh Tarik“, amusing hundreds of thousands of viewers.
Mohd Asri Atan, who is a Malaysian cook, runs the Instagram food account @ashhryyyyy, where he has 347k followers.
He posted a video of himself cooking Carbonara Teh Tarik on 19 Aug and included the recipe in the caption.
Here are the ingredients needed:
- Spaghetti
- Teh Tarik Kurang Manis (less sweet) from BOH Tea
- Carbonara sauce
- Capsicum
- Mushrooms
- Cheese
- Onions
- Garlic
- Pepperoni
- Shrimps
- Parsley
- Black pepper
He explained that he used less sweet teh tarik from @bohteamalaysia and that he replaced the cooking cream and milk with teh tarik to come up with this dish.
Basically, he added tea to the pan of spaghetti.
“Oh my god, I swear this tastes good with the tea and milk blending well with the gravy and spaghetti,” he wrote in his caption.
I’m still not convinced but who knows, he might be telling the truth and his dish might end up being the next big fusion food hit.
Did I mention that my fellow writer’s really amused at how he presented the recipe?
Step-By-Step Instructions On The Dish
Asri posted a step-by-step video to show viewers how he made the carbonara. Everything seemed pretty normal until he brought in the teh tarik.
He started off by dicing capsicum, mushrooms, and pepperoni and also chopped up some onion and garlic.
After cooking the onion and garlic, he tossed in the pepperoni, capsicum, shrimp, black pepper and mushrooms.
Next, he prepared some instant carbonara sauce to go with his teh tarik, which he made by combining three packets of instant teh tarik with water.
After adding the sauce and teh tarik, he added two slices of cheddar and some parsley, before throwing the cooked spaghetti back in and giving everything a good mix.
And here’s what the final product looks like:
This is nothing like how I pictured carbonara to be.
It might be quite bizarre, and it’s definitely not my cup of tea, but I still think we have to give him an A1 for creativity.
Would you try this for yourself?
