Netflix announced that a new Teletubbies series will be released on 14 November 2022, deemed as the “21st-century refresh” version.
This series contains 12 episodes and will include a new and original “Tummy Tales” song. Of course, it includes the iconic custard, Tubbytronic Superdome, and all of them dancing happily.
The trailer ends with a close-up of one of the show’s Sun Baby—just like how the usual shows end.
Here is the full trailer to relive your childhood memories (or nightmares):
In Case you Forgot About the Teletubbies
For the late 1990s and 2000s kids, Teletubbies is probably one of those shows we will anticipate watching after school.
Teletubbies is about four screen-tummy creatures—Tinky-Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po, going through new adventures each day. You cannot forget about how much they love their Tubby Toast and Tubby Custard in the Tubbytronic Superdome.
At the end of each show, the sun baby comes out to say goodbye—which some people found creepy afterwards but at that point in time, we probably did not think so much.
The Teletubbies Controversy Back Then
Apart from thinking that the sun baby is creepy, there was another huge controversy about Teletubbies.
The audience back then was quite sharp to pick out this point—Tinky Winky is gay.
Say what now?
Many people noticed how Tinky Winky has a boy’s voice, but carries a red purse and wears a tutu sometimes. In addition, he is purple, the gay pride colour, and his antenna is shaped like a triangle—the gay pride symbol.
In 1999, an American Pastor, Jerry Falwell, wrote an article stating that having “little boys running around with purses and acting effeminate and leaving the idea that the masculine male, the feminine female is out, and gay is OK” is something “Christians do not agree with.”
However, Kenn Viselman, the head of the show’s production company, said that Tinky Winky is “not gay. He’s not straight. He’s just a character in a children’s series. I think that we should just let the Teletubbies go and play in Teletubbyland and not try to define them.”
The late Tinky Winky actor, Simon Barnes, also said, “People always ask me if Tinky Winky is gay, but the character is supposed to be a 3-year-old, so the question is really quite silly.”
Honestly, how many people actually know what LGBTQ+ mean as a three-year-old child?
Of course, it was the 90s, so it became a hoo-ha. In 2022, you can claim that all four Teletubbies are gay and no would would bat an eye.
New Series Features New Voice Actors and a New Narrator
It seems that all is good now, with society becoming more accepting and given how much Teletubbies played a huge role in our childhood.
The new series will feature new voice actors and a new narrator from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Tituss Burgess.
Netflix did not say much about what the new series entails so you will have to watch it to find out.
Reactions From Netizens
There were mixed reactions regarding the new Teletubbies series. Some of them were dismayed by the news.
Whereas some of them look forward to the upcoming series.
We can clearly tell who are the all-time Teletubbies fans.
