Our ears are not having a great time as of late.
For thousands of years, our human ears have been unencumbered; we’ve draped clothes on our bodies and hats on our heads, but our ears have always been as free as a bird.
Sure, those who wear spectacles might find their ears slightly inconvenienced, but it was never too much of a bother.

Now that we have to wear masks every time we go outside, our ears are pulled violently towards a position they were not meant to be in, leaving them hurting, confused, and rather sad.

Fortunately, Temasek Foundation has a solution for us.
Temasek Foundation Reveals There’re Actually 2 Ways To Wear The Free Masks
On 21 Sep, the Temasek Foundation (TF) started distributing free masks to residents, the latest in a series of nationwide mask distribution exercises.
If you’ve already collected yours, which is likely considering how kiasu we are as a people, you’d have noticed that this mask looks a little different to the previous ones given out by the government.
That’s because this mask can be worn in two different ways.
Instead of the regular ear loops that strangle the life out of our ears, TF’s masks have longer, stretchable loops that can either be snugly tightened over our ears or tied at the back of our heads.
The latter method will not only be more comfortable for most but also less of a hassle for those who wear headscarves or headgear that cover the ears.

So, how do you wear them?
Last Saturday (3 Sep), TF shared a video demonstration on their Facebook page, showing residents how to wear their new masks in a way they never knew possible.
As always, the first step is to place the mask over your nose and mouth; if it’s only covering your mouth and not your nose, you might as well grab the nearest stranger on the street and sneeze into their face.
Next, pull both loops on the sides of your head to the back, and pull the bead down on one side to create a small loop.

Then, simply place the knotted end of the other side through the loop, and pull the bead back down to fasten it.
Then, all you have to do is pull it down as far as you want, depending on how tight you want it to be around your head.
And voila! You now have a mask that doesn’t make your ears feel like they’re being assaulted.
While the period for both collection and pre-orders has ended, TF said there are plans for yet another collection drive in the future, so do keep a lookout for updates!
