Tengah’s Garden District HDB to be Launched in May; Looks Like Condo Instead

Just yesterday (20 May), it was announced that the first housing project in Tengah’s Garden District will be available for sale in the Build-to-Order (BTO) exercise this month.

The Garden District, as it’s named, is the second of five housing districts in Tengah to be developed.

And while I’m not sure of a lot of things, including where I put my keys this morning, I am sure of one thing:

Singaporeans about to get kicked out of their houses by their Tiger mums and dads will surely rejoice at the news.

Because here’s the thing: Garden District will offer up to 6,500 new homes when fully completed.

6,500.

And if the snapshots are to be believed…

It’s set to look pretty slick too.

The New Tengah District

According to Channel NewsAsia, the whole Tengah new town, roughly the size of Bishan town, will proffer around 42,000 new homes.

And of those 42,000, 6,500 are expected to hail from the all-new Garden District.

Located close to the future Jurong Innovation District, Garden District will boast greenery and water features, in line with the whole ‘nature’ concept of Tengah.

A greenway will also meander through the housing blocks, said HDB.

“With recreational, social and communal facilities lining both sides, the farmway will serve as a green recreational corridor linking the precincts in Garden District together,” HDB added.

And for a more detailed look, there will be six thematic playgrounds inspired by nature or motifs like flowers and garden creatures.

All the roads in the district will possess 2m-wide dedicated cycling paths, accompanied by 1.5m-wide pedestrian paths to encourage walking and cycling.

There will also be an MRT station (set along the upcoming Jurong Region Line) situated near the district, so no worries about transportation out of Wakanda the new district.

Well, what do you know;

This looks more like a condominium estate than anything else!

Future of HDB, perhaps?

Two-room Flexi flats to five-room flats

In this month’s BTO exercise, HDB has revealed that there’ll be more than 2,000 flats on offer, stretching from two-room Flexi flats to five-room flats.

And in addition to the flats in Garden District, more units in Plantation District will be made available for sale.

So for those cruelly separated from your peers in Plantation District, no worries; you can be a proud resident of Plantation District too!

A Brief History

For those curious about the district’s developmental history, here’s the rough gist of it:

Back in 2016, a plan to redevelop Tengah, a former military training area, was disclosed in 2016, alongside the launch of its own master plan.

And in November 2018, the first flats in the town, in Plantation District, were cleared for sale with 1,620 units.

And well, you know the rest.

Aunt Matilda: Hah, screw you and your loser husband, Mum. I’m out of here to Singapore’s version of Wakanda!

But Aunt Matilda, you need money to buy an apartment there.

Aunt Matilda: Easy. Hey Mum, could you lend me a little money, please?

Matilda Illicit Lenglet First: Well, screw you.
