A medical team from Bangkok’s Police General Hospital has received widespread praise for conducting emergency surgery outdoors following a powerful earthquake that struck on Friday (28 March 2025).

The surgical team, led by Pol Lt Col Waranyu Jiramrit (also known as Dr Toey), was in the middle of performing a colostomy procedure when the earthquake hit Bangkok.

The tremors, which originated from a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar, forced an immediate evacuation of the hospital building.

Rather than abandoning the patient, the medical professionals made the quick decision to continue the operation outside the hospital premises.

Life-Saving Decision

The surgical team recognised that leaving the incision open could lead to serious complications, including bowel displacement or exposure to outside air.

Despite the challenging circumstances, the doctors completed the surgery in just 10 minutes, maintaining strict hygiene protocols throughout the procedure.

The team followed strict hygiene protocols, using sterile gloves and equipment akin to those used in field surgery, reported The Nation Thailand.

Social Media Praise

A Facebook user named “Tony Lim” shared a photo of the outdoor operation, which quickly went viral across social media platforms. The image shows medical personnel gathered around a patient on a stretcher, performing the delicate procedure in an open-air setting.

Thai netizens flooded the comments with praise, hailing the medical team as heroes for their dedication and quick thinking during the crisis.

The patient is now reported to be in stable condition and recovering in a hospital room.

Doctor’s Response

Dr Toey expressed surprise at the attention the photo received online.

He mentioned that he had no idea that the images were being shared on social media and receiving so much praise. He felt that he was simply doing his “duty as a doctor” to save the patient’s life.

Widespread Earthquake Impact

The earthquake that prompted this extraordinary medical response caused significant damage across Bangkok. The Police General Hospital was not the only medical facility affected by the tremors.

At Siriraj Hospital, nurses evacuated patients into streets and parking lots. The Thai Army assisted in relocating patients and equipment from Rajavithi Hospital to a nearby school.

The most severe damage occurred at a building under construction in the Bang Sue area, which completely collapsed.

Authorities are still searching for workers trapped under the rubble of the State Audit Office building, with at least five deaths confirmed so far.

National Response

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has declared Bangkok a disaster area following the earthquake.

The earthquake that affected Thailand originated in Myanmar, where two powerful tremors—measuring 7.7 and 6.4 in magnitude—struck at around 12:50 pm local time on 28 March 2025.

The death toll in Myanmar has reportedly risen to over 1,000 as rescue teams continue recovery efforts.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force has deployed an 80-member contingent to Myanmar to assist with humanitarian efforts, while the Singapore Red Cross has committed S$150,000 to support emergency relief in both Myanmar and Thailand.
