Thai Man Tries to Throw Grenade at Ex-Girlfriend, Dies When It Blows Up in His Hand

A 35-year-old man died instantly after a grenade exploded in his hand during a domestic dispute in Tha Chana district, Surat Thani, Thailand, on 25 May 2025.

The incident occurred around 8am at a house in Moo 1, Samo Thong subdistrict.

Surapong Thongnak had gone to his ex-girlfriend’s house in an attempt to reconcile, but she rejected him.

Following the rejection, Surapong allegedly tried to stab her with a pair of scissors. Local residents who were having coffee nearby intervened and stopped the attack.

Surapong then returned to his Honda Civic and retrieved an M26 grenade. He pulled the pin and hurled the explosive device toward the group.

When the grenade failed to detonate immediately, he picked it up and attempted to throw it again. It exploded while still in his hand, killing him instantly.

His ex-girlfriend was unharmed, having fled into her house before the blast.

Several others were injured in the explosion, which also shattered the windows of a nearby parked car.

Police investigator Pol Sub Lt Chinnakrit Sawatdiwong of Tha Chana Police Station received reports of the explosion, which left one person dead and multiple injured. Rescue workers from the Jonsaratha Foundation were dispatched to the scene.

The blast took place in front of a single-storey concrete house. Surapong was found lying face down in a pool of blood, wearing a grey T-shirt and three-quarter jeans.

All injured individuals were transported to Tha Chana Hospital for treatment.
