Officers arrived at a wooden house to find the 87-year-old woman’s body lying on a bamboo bed. She had deep wounds on her forehead and left cheek, plus bruising around her eye socket.

The suspect, Singha (name transliterated from Mandarin), lived with the elderly woman who had adopted him. He told police he discovered his grandmother collapsed in the bathroom and assumed she had fallen and hit her head.

Singha claimed he moved her to the bed and cleaned her wounds, but she never regained consciousness.

Neighbors revealed that Singha and the deceased woman had lived together for many years. The woman had transferred her personal property to Singha’s name.

He had sold some land to obtain money.

Truth Emerges Through Investigation

Police autopsy results confirmed the woman died from an assault, not an accidental fall. Neighbors provided crucial testimony that contradicted Singha’s story.

On the day of the incident, the elderly woman had complained to neighbors about Singha beating her.

That evening, neighbors heard sounds coming from their house along with the victim’s cries. Shortly after, Singha emerged to tell them his grandmother had died in the bathroom.

The neighbors found his explanation suspicious and contacted authorities. Police subsequently arrested Singha, who confessed to the crime during questioning.

Confession and Charges

Singha admitted his guilt to police. He explained that his temperament had become increasingly volatile since his wife left with their children five years ago.

The grandmother’s complaints frustrated him, leading him to strike her with a stone and cause her death.

Singha now faces charges of murder and concealing a body to cover up the cause of death. He remains in custody pending further investigation.

Elder abuse in Thailand is a growing concern, with most cases involving family members as perpetrators. The most common forms are psychological abuse, abandonment due to financial problems, and physical assault, often triggered by stress, addiction, or property disputes.

Many elderly victims do not report abuse out of fear of causing trouble for their families, leading to underreported cases.

As Thailand’s elderly population rapidly increases, experts warn that social and economic changes may worsen the problem, especially as more seniors live alone or depend on relatives for care.

Authorities and researchers urge stronger community vigilance, better enforcement of protective laws, and more social support to address the rising tide of violence and neglect against older persons.
