A student in Thailand developed kidney failure and a rare muscle condition after allegedly being forced to perform 200 squats as punishment for submitting homework late.

The incident has sparked widespread criticism online.

According to a Facebook post on Thursday, 12 June, the student was instructed by a teacher to complete 200 continuous squats as a disciplinary measure.

The student later experienced severe leg pain for several days and began passing dark, cola-coloured urine.

He was taken to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with rhabdomyolysis. This condition occurs when muscle tissue breaks down due to extreme physical exertion or trauma.

When muscle cells die, they release toxins into the bloodstream, which can lead to acute kidney failure. Dark, coke-coloured urine was reportedly one key symptom of the disease. If not treated promptly, the condition can be fatal.

In this case, the damage to the kidneys was fortunately not too severe. The student is currently under medical care, but doctors are still monitoring the situation closely to determine whether dialysis will be needed.

A doctor treating the student contacted the Facebook page Drama-addict to publicise the case. He said the aim was to raise awareness about the risks of extreme punishments in schools and to prevent similar cases in the future.

He also warned that such disciplinary actions are not only harmful in schools but can also be dangerous in military environments.

The Drama-addict page noted that similar cases have occurred in Thailand before. In 2020, a comparable incident was reported at a school in Khon Kaen province. Despite past tragedies, strict physical punishments are still being used by some teachers.

Social media users condemned the teacher’s actions. Many urged the student’s family to take legal action. Some users questioned why the teacher did not ask why the homework was late, while others said such punishments were outdated and dangerous.

One user wrote that teachers should correct students with care and understanding. Another said this was not an isolated case and criticised the education system for failing to protect students.

It is still unclear whether the student’s family plans to pursue legal action against the teacher or the school.
