Every one of us wants to be healthy. We want to be able to lead a disease-free existence and die peacefully at a ripe old age. To do that, we resort to consuming as much food as we can that we deem beneficial so as to achieve some form of longevity.
The thing is, do we really know if what we are consuming are really better foods for us? More often than not, the physical packaging and careful placement of words waylay us, making us think we are consuming the good stuff when in actual fact, we aren’t.
Soy milk
Many of us automatically assume that soymilk is definitely a healthier drink option. However, it can contain a whole lot of sugar and a whole lot of unseen calories. To ensure you are consuming a healthy version, drink it sugarless.
Fat-free yogurt
Depending on what ingredients are added into the yogurt, there may be a ton of invisible sugars present. A really healthy option will be to get plain fat-free Greek yogurt and add in fresh fruits or unflavored nuts and/or honey to spruce up the taste.
Salads
We have seen a lot of salad establishments popping up all over Singapore in the past 5 years. While it’s true that having your vegetables fresh is healthy, the additional ingredients and sauces may not be. To amp up the flavor of their salads, some have opted for the creamier sauces and extra ingredients like fried chicken pieces, which only serve to add on the calories. Leave the fried options aside and get lighter olive oil based sauces instead.
Fruit juices
Unless you see for yourself that the juice is being made in front of you, it is always a better option to consume the fruit itself. This also ensures that you are getting all the dietary fiber that is found in whole fruits. Fruit juices, especially pre-packed ones, contain a lot of sugar and other flavorings that add to the caloric count.
Soups
As much as many of us enjoy a nice, warm, rich soup at the end of a tiring workday, this may not be as healthy as we think it is. Heavy cream-based soups contain a high amount of fat, starch and even salt. A better option will be to have clear soups instead with lots of fresh vegetables and meat pieces that have been pan seared, grilled or baked.
