The Reason Why Most People Hate The Sound of Their Own Voice

Unless you possess the godly voice of Morgan Freeman, chances are that you hate the sound of your voice.

I mean, it’s one thing to hear yourself as you speak.

It’s quite another, however, to hear your voice on an external platform, such as a video or audio recording.

If you find yourself nodding along, it’s alright; you’re not alone.

And guess what? This notion can be put down to one very simple analysis:

Science.

If you prefer to, here’s a video explaining why you hate your own video:

Different from How Others Hear You

According to Washington Post, your voice as you hear it when you speak aloud is very different from the voice the rest of the world recognises.

Apparently, that’s because your voice comes to you via a different channel than everyone else.

Let me just tap into my inner Albert Einstein right here:

Right, listen up fellas. When sound waves from the outside world, like someone else’s voice, hit the outer ear, they are siphoned through the ear canal to correspond with the ear drum, creating vibrations that the brain subsequently translates into sound.

When we talk, our ear drums and inner ears vibrate from the sound waves we’re projecting into the air. But unbeknownst to us, there’s actually another source of vibration:

The movements caused by the production of the sound.

And because our vocal chords and airways are trembling as we speak, those vibrations carry over to auditory processing as well.

Now, your body is naturally better at carrying low, rich tones than the air. What that means is that your voice will sound lower and richer when these two sources of sound combine into one.

And that, pipsqueaks, is why hearing your voice on an external channel is so off-putting: it’s unfamiliar and distinctly unpleasant because of the relative thinness. Like really? I sound like Morgan Freeman when I hear myself speak, but sound like Donald Duck in a video you took of me.

Really???

Anyways, in conclusion, don’t ever be tempted to stop speaking at all. After all, if you think about it…

Even Morgan Freeman is bound to have some voice insecurities, seeing how his own perception of his voice differs from the audio norm.
