Everyone knows to wear the auspicious red colour during Chinese New Year, and definitely most of us have tried to wear something else during our rebellious days.
“But Mom,” you’ve probably whined, “why cannot wear black?”

Why indeed. All the cool kids wear black, so why can’t you?
If your family is very superstitious, they won’t even want to explain, as it is very inauspicious to say the word ‘death’ during CNY. Then they’ll probably force you into some bright red shirt so you look like a firecracker.
During CNY, different colours have different meanings, which is why we always wear bright colours like red or orange, to symbolise prosperity and good luck. Similarly, colours like black and white are avoided because they are traditionally worn during funerals.
Nobody (especially not your favourite rich relative) is going to like it when you show up to their house as if you’re going to a funeral. Confirm no ang pow.
Black clothing is thus associated with death, depression and all sorts of unlucky and inauspicious things. So before you try to wear black again and get scolded by your mom, don’t say we didn’t warn you!
Honestly, there’s really nothing wrong with red at all. Red-coloured anything represents good luck and good fortune during CNY, as you’ve probably guessed from the excess of bright red everywhere.

What you might not have known, however, is the deeper meaning behind the colour. Red symbolizes fire in traditional Chinese culture and is also known to ward off spirits of bad fortune.
If you really have something against the colour, and definitely, definitely do not want to wear red, here are some other colours that you can go for without offending every single family member you have:

- Orange
- Pink

They say Orange is the New Black, so go for orange if you really have a craving for black!
Seriously, just wear the same colour as your ang pow and you’ll never go wrong.
